im newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and im reading through the posts on here and it seems its not just sugar I have to watch out for but carbs as well.

I don't understand how many carbs I have to have, what is low?

I have been using My Fitness Pal to lose weight prior to being diagnosed. I have other health conditions including fibromyalgia and 3rd stage kidney disease . I haven't been very active but I am working on increasing that .

Fitness Pal has said I need

Cals -1580
Carbs - 212
Fat - 57
Protein - 85
Sodium - 2,300
Sugar - 77

are these numbers in the area I need to be around ? Has anyone used My Fitness Pal ?

I say keep your carbs down. You don't need carbs as such, so the lower the carbs count the better. Protein seems fine. When it comes to calories I disagree. If you were bed-bound well yes, as a geriatric you might do well on 1580 but otherwise, no. I am a woman of 51yo and I have at least 2250 calories a day, often up to 2400. Not that I count calories, I count carbs. As I go for low carb I eat at least 150 grams of fat every day, often 200. That way I keep my bg low and I loose weight.

I'm sorry to hear you have other health issues, but because of those it would be difficult to say any diet would be better or worse for you overall. You need to ask your doctor to refer you to a specialist dietician that deals with patients with kidney failure, and diabetes, as he will need to look at protein, sodium, fat, carbs, among all the other aspects to suit all your conditions I'm afraid.

Lorraine, with kidney problems I would go lower on protein and higher on fat. Go for 0.8 maximum of protein per kilo body weight. As i don't know your weight nor height I cant advice you, but go for good quality fats like olive oil, organic butter and coconut butter.

Don't do this.
Totto has no way of knowing the stage of your kidney failure, and as you say only you have other health conditions including what you have listed, it may be right, it may be completely wrong for you overall. You really need to discuss a personally tailored diet to suit all your conditions, not just one.

No, I don't know the state of anybodys kidneys not even my own. I do know however that carbohydrates will raise your blood glucose and excess intake of protein will do the same AND damage your kidneys. I keep to a healthy high fat diet to spare both kidneys and bg.

thanks for all your help, I did wonder if the carbs were to high. When the Doctor confirmed my diabetes she did say I have to make an appointment to see the nurse who will go through things with me and point me in the right direction of any specialist I see. The downside is I cant get an appointment until 13th Feb so im doing my best to help myself.
I am currently very overweight but have lost 7lbs so far and hopefully will continue to lose weight
I am going to get myself the Cal and Carb book which I notice has been mentioned on other posts, so for now I think my best bet is to ignore fitness buddy and count the Calories and Carbs myself.
I have noticed I can reduce Carbs by switching food like bread, breakfast cereals etc
