Hi all, I've been looking around the forum for a while now and thought that I should finally post something up so here goes...

I was diagnosed type 2 mid December last year (I was rushed into hospital twice in 24 hours  , the cause of which was never found but diabetes was) and have since learned that the diet suggested by the NHS dietitian will make you feel very ill, your doctor will tell you that you have "brought this on yourself with your diet" (dont remember her coming round for dinner) and that some "friends" will treat you like a leper

That aside I'm on 3 x 500 metformin a day and 40mg simvastatin and have managed to go from average readings of 15+ to between 5.2 and 6.8 and have managed to shed a steady 2lb's a week since diagnosis and give up smoking as well, and it hasn't been all hard work either since I started reading up on the subject here.

Next on the agenda is byetta starting the middle of this month (that kinda scares me a bit) which the diabetic nurse reckons will help me with the constant feeling of hunger that I have as well as helping to control my sugar levels ...

If your still reading then I owe you a minute of your life back, so sorry about the rambling and hello....

Hey there Andy :)

Welcome to the forum, well done on all the changes you have made! I gave up smoking before xmas (before i knew about diabetes) and boy am I glad that I did that now lol I think my world would have fallen apart if i'd of found out about diabetes, had to (Radically) change my diet AND give up smoking!

I don't know much about treatement yet as I was only diagnosed on Fri, but hey that's why I'm here lol

See you about

Hi Andy, and welcome.

It sounds like you have a handle on the diabetes thing already, so well done.
I hope you stick around on here.

All the best,

fergus

Thanks for the welcome guys...

I had tried giving up smoking loads of times and failed, this time I knew I had no choice and its been easy in the grand scheme of things.

The diet changes I'm now getting used to, always liked veg and never ate sweet things anyway but was eating a lot of carbs, mainly pasta, always thought it was a fairly healthy way to eat (shows how little I knew), I'm slowly geting the bg levels down and balanced but theres still a lot of work there yet and its a steep learning curve, in the (nearish) future I hope to be free of medication.

The biggest shock to me was the attitude shown by my doctor and a few others who should know better and the diet they were telling me was best, I think they were ater making work for themselves in the future...

BTDT, I was progressing comparatively slowly until I was put on the Heart Healthy High Carb Low Fat diet, then I went downhill so fast I was accused of noncompliance.

Hi Sue, the hunger thing has been going on since long before I was diagnosed and changed my eating habits, but now I've cut out carbs almost completely (I would say low carb but its not measured), **** I miss my weekly fish and chips

Have the fish but nix the chips and batter. Once you've broken through the carb cravings you may well find you don't like them as much as you thought you did

Not so sure about ditching the batter so I'd best try to leave them alone altogether for now

Chips I can do without, I only used to have them once a week anyway, its roast spuds and Yorkshire pud's I'm missing most, always ate loads of veg but loved my roastie's, replacing them with extra cauli and broccoli has been fairly hard but in the grand scheme of things it's well worth the effort...

It was so cold and miserable yesterday when I was shopping that I decided to have a lasagne and chips from the bakers!!(gasps of 'oh how could you, heard from all quarters of the forum!!)Anyway, you know, I really struggled to eat the chips!!Looks like my chip days are over folks!!It's the same with sweets, just don't have the same taste anymore.

Lasagne sounds good right now, minus the chips of course :D, I hate walking past chip shops, love the smell, bakeries as well, I have to walk on the other side of the road to avoid it as it gets me thinking about food...

Did a prawn omelette with side salad for lunch, Saturday lunchtimes are normally the worst day of the week for me, where normally I would of grabbed something quick from a burger van or takeaway so although it wasn't the healthiest it was better than normal...
