people who act like they are the diabetic police!!!
Hi
I was diagnosed with type 1 about three years ago, after living with ME for about nearly ten, a shock being nearly 40 at the time and with no history of diabetes in my family. Its been getting me down recently, I have thyroid problems as well, aparently not bad enough for any treatment, and feel tired all the time, I'm told this is just the ME but I'm not so sure. I was prescribed anti-depressants to give my energy levels a boost. However on reading all the side-effects decided to give them a miss. I started taking St Johns Wort instead, does anyone know anything about it or how it will effect my diabetes? or any input at all gratefully received.

Hi Avi
Welcome to the forum, there are lots of people around to help if they can! Or just offer a listening ear!
I know about depression as i have had that for many years! Long story! Too long!

Hi Avi.

Just a warm welcome to the forum. Have a look round the different posts or do a search at the top right for previously posted info on St.John's Wort.

You posted as being T1, however your profile shows T1.5 ? LADA ? If you do a search on that there is more info.

Prepare to be amused/amazed and confused all at the same time. Just ask questions.

Hi Avi,

St John's Wort contains the same chemicals as in drugs such as Prozac. I don't know many people on SJW but those who take SSRI anti-depressants do not seem to have any affect on their blood sugars.

Your immune system seems to be at a low par. You may be interested to see the effects that vitamin D supplementation can have on improving almost every tissue in the body.

If you visit you tube and search for " Vitamin D deficiency" there are several videos of lectures given at a conference in San Diego recently. They were produced by Davis University of California Television. The relevant ones are:

Vitamin D basics, Dr Heaney.
Vitamin D and prevention of chronic disease. Dr Holick.
Vitamin D and cardiovascular disease. Dr Sane.
Vitamin D and Diabetes. Dr Garland.
Vitamin D and Cancer. Dr Trump.

Thanks for the welcome,
Sorry about the confusion over my type Ken, but I am a bit confused myself. My initial diagnosis was type two, but I didn't think I fitted the profile and asked if I could be type 1.5, my consultant took a strop though and said there was no such type, only type three? However after being on Gliclazide to no avail my antibodies came back positive for type 1. I thought I was too old to be diagnosed as a type 1 and my consultant is a bit unapproachable.
Katherine is vitamin D the sunshine vitamin? My husband is always saying he thinks I have SAD syndrome, or maybe he just thinks I'm sad!

Hi avi

You said : my consultant is a bit unapproachable.

This makes my blood boil,

These people need to remember they are there to care for people - not dictate and get in a strop because someone has the intelligence and temerity to question them ? They are not God's and the sooner we see more of the GOOD GUYS as posted elsewhere on the forum the better it will be.

Oh, for a magic wand ! :D

Hi Avi,
Welcome to the forum. My story is similar to yours and it is confusing trying to work out what "type" we are. For 5 years I was told I was Type 2 then last September I saw a specialist and had a positive anti-bodies test and I was told I'm LADA. Like you I thought I must be Type 1.5 but in the letter the specialist sent to my G.P. he refers to me as a Type 1. When I queried this he said I must now look upon myself as a Type 1 and be treated as Type 1. He said LADA is just Type 1 that comes on later in life than is normal.
If folk ask me now I just say I'm Type 1...it saves a lot of explaining.
All the best, choccie.

Hi Katherine
I live in Scotland as well, isn't our weather delightful? I will certainly have a look on Utube, all sounds very interesting.

My thyroid has been both slightly under and over active as well but within "normal" range, I also have a thyroid cyst which I am told does me no harm.

Two things that determine a competent doctor from the rest

they know that 20% of Type 2s are not overweight

they know that adult onset Type 1 is actually commoner than childhood onset

OK, three things: they know that thyroid needs to be TIGHTLY CONTROLLED especially as it has a major impact on diabetes, and also on depression. Some people are left until they are nearly comatose before treatment is started which is pretty appalling. I'd try to chase them into doing something about that ASAP, I've known a few people who had to make a geographical move to get thyroid issues addressed and the difference was spectacular.
