Hello

A consultant referred me back to my GP concerning a blood test finding when exploring a hand problem that was not diabetes.

Based upon home tests and test by Lloyds Pharmacy, I expect to be diagnosed with diabetes. The GP surgery's fasting blood test is tomorrow.

But my blood pressure seems to be high, averaging 155/95.

To what extent are the two issues managed.

Does the treatment with medicines for blood pressure improve diabetes problems or does the treatment with medicines for diabetes improve blood pressure problems?

Does the GP deal with the two issues togather or are they two entirely separate streams of treatment?

Should I arrange seeing the GP for blood pressure before getting the diabetes results?

[P.S. The self-test thing is driven by my anxiety to know. It takes some time to actually get to a GP.]

It wasnt trigger finger by any chance?

Hello Dawn. I do not know after some months what the hand problem is as yet. I have painful joints in three fingers and sore tissue on the fingers. It appears not to be carpal tunnel and arthritis is dismissed for now. But movement of fingers is not affected. The diabetes seems to be a side discovery.

Simple answer to your question about diabetes and blood pressure is that both will be treated separately, however as the GP will always (should) treat a patient as a whole person then they will also have to be considered in tandem when prescribing. The GP has to look and see if any particular medicine has a detrimental effect on either the diabetes or blood pressure. They would then prescribe accordingly.

If, for instance, you maybe needed to lose weight to improve your diabetes and your control was also good, your insulin resistance improved then that could also help to improve your blood pressure over time. A knock on effect. Taking measures to control your diabetes is not always a quick fix.

However, many blood pressure medications can swiftly lower your high BP down to the target of below 130/80 which is recommended. Taking away one problem which would then allow you to concentrate on the diabetes control.

Both conditions are important to get control of, as to which has the highest priority only your GP will know. May be an idea to discuss your concerns with him/her as well as on here. You can also discuss if you are diabetic or not.

High BP and diabetes are linked. There is a much higher risk of problems from hypertension if you are diabetic. I would expect any doctor to treat your hypertension in conjunction with and having consideration for your diabetes.

So, your doc. will treat you for both conditions, mine will happily discuss any health problem either as a single item or all together.

If I want to discuss more than one problem I simply book a double appointment.

Hi Sterling, I was only diagnosed last week, bit of a shock as I'm not overweight and I'm a vegetarian.
I had really high blood pressure I dont know where I was looking but I found a site that seemed to imply that trigger finger can be a precursor. Middle joints on both hands I have to open my fingers on a morning. You can click them too very painful.
Ive been asked by the DN how I feel about statins erm not if I can avoid them. Put myself on a low carb diet however it is hard but not impossible being a veggie as i do eat eggs and cheese.
Let us know how you get on at the docs.

I appreciate the big welcome and the useful comments.

This will help me raise specific questions with the doctor who I will visit either tomorrow or Monday.

My GP fasting test revealed a score of eight which more or less commensorate with my own test results.

I presume that I will be diaagnose with diabetes.

I generally eat well and swim off 900 calories five days a week so this really is a bolt from the blue. And I have no family history of diabetes.

However, "nocuria" is a big issue. Should I be prescribed medication, would that mitigate against the night-time frequency issue?

My diabetes was confirmed yesterday, Type 2.

I have been prescribed Metformin.

I am luckier than the pony at the farm where my wife and I keep our horses. He has 15 Metfomin tablets in the morning and 15 more in the evening!

Anyway, there are positives to this because I may learn soon why my hands so incredibly sore which was the reason for the investigation in the first place. It has just taken months of investigation to get to this.

I take the 850 mg metformin and think they are the size of horse pills. I had no idea that horses take them, thankfully I don't take 15 of them at a time

Once you get your blood glucose levels under control, your night-time trips to the bathroom should become less frequent. However, you may still find yourself getting up in the night - it's to do with getting older!

As a male, if it continues and you are worried, go and ask for a prostate test. That's another cause. Always worth getting things checked.

Hi Sterling,
It's a good chance that the pains in your finger joints is due to the ramipril/blood pressure tablets. I had trouble with this problem and my GP suggested the usual finger problems. I stopped the ramipril and went onto losartan potassium tablets. The pain has almost stopped after months of my right index finger needing to be strapped up as it became very painful. I asked the forum about blood pressure tablets recently, however, watch out for oral lichen planus/lichen planus on the skin. I developed both of these when I started ramipril and they have continued with the losartan tablets. I've STOPPED the BP tablets and have a steriod ointment for the lichen planus. The skin problem seems to be improving...The hospital is supposed to be writing to my GP so I hope that the GP will let me try some other BP tablets as my BP will be up..no doubt. The hospital also put me onto Betneslo 500mg soluble tablets for the lichen planus but these tablets have made my Blood Sugars go SSSKKKKKYYYY Highhh...******. I having to take a lot more porcine neutral to bring the BSs down to single figures. Keep a eye out for little bumps on the skin that might get bigger and it itches..check your mouth..better to look up lichen planus on the net..just in case. This is MY experience, not good.
