I have just had my blood sugars done at the doctor and it's come back at 120 it's gone up from 98 about a year ago and I'm on metformin I honestly thought it would of gone down on tablets, I've lost a stone and a half amd have had an awful 2 years losing both parents and my dog , I just can't understand all this as I wasn't on any tablets before and it was lower , would they add another medication to see if that helps , I'm so worried now at the high number , I'm due for a hip op in the next 6bto 8 months so really need to get this down, has anyone else had high numbers like this x

Hi @maxjoe121 can I ask what kind of foods you eat? most of us with T2 find the best way to control our BG is with a low carb or even keto lifestyle

Metformin in itself won’t do much to alter your Hba1c, it doesn’t work like that, how it works it helps stop your liver dumping glucose into your system. What were the numbers 98 & 120 were they your Hba1c?

I'm afraid that a lot of people get led astray by not being told what the problem actually is - for an ordinary type 2 diabetic all the 'healthy' carbs just make things worse.
Weightloss doesn't lower blood glucose and neither does Metformin - they can have an effect on the metabolism, but actively lowering the amount of glucose in your blood stream, no.
If you can get a blood glucose tester - I use one from Spirit Healthcare, the Tee 2 +, not all that expensive and provides adequate information on levels after eating - I went from a HbA1c of 91 down to 41 in 6 months eating low carb and using the meter to find what I could eat.
As you will have been experiencing high blood glucose levels cutting down gradually is advisable as it can be a bit of a shock to drop suddenly and drastically.

Try not to stress as that can affect your BG negatively also, if you are hungry - eat, there’s no point in making yourself miserable as it’s a long term way to eat and has to be something you enjoy, I do keto which is 20g carb a day - you may be able to manage more carbs which is why it’s best to have a metre to test how foods affect you -

so what I eat

All meats with the fat included, chicken, ham, beef, lamb, pork, bacon, high content sausages, salmon, smoked salmon, eggs, some cheese, a bit of cream, butter, above ground veg, especially cauliflower - can be mashed, riced etc to replace potatoes, celeriac is one good below ground veg you can eat, great cubed & roasted, green veggies, mayo, avocado, a few berries, 85% chocolate a couple of squares, sugar free jellies, Greek yogurt, pork scratchings, check the carbs that are in everything.

Take your time to get your head round it it’s not a race and as long as your on a downward trend BG wise what you’re doing will work

For my dinner tonight I had roasted harrisa salmon with a few green beans & asparagus flash fried in butter & olive oil with 3 cherry tomatoes halved and a blob of mayo, and 2 squares of 85% choc - as you get to grips you can more inventive with your food, have a look at the two what have you eaten today threads for ideas, I’ll post the links to the threads for you

In general, I set 10% carbs as the limit, but I do eat small amounts of high cocoa chocolate.
I eat any meat, cheese, eggs, fish, full fat dairy, butter and lard, mushrooms tomatoes celery celeriac swede courgette aubergine beans in their pods cucumber lettuce cabbage cauliflower. From the frozen section in LIdl I get mixed berries, mixed veges (the one without sweetcorn) and Asian and Italian stirfry mixes. I drink coffee with cream, mint and liquorice tea from supermarket teabags, also lemon tea from green tealeaves and green gunpowder menthos from the specialist shop.
I do have the ingredients for low carb baking, but keep them in the freezer as I have not done any for a while now. I bought some walnuts and brazils as Christmas is coming and I'll make some chocolate coated nuts sitting on a base of desiccated coconut as sweety substitutes.
