Hounslow Cardio/Diabetes meeting - Tuesday Sept 25th

    Hayley Lawrence gave a good talk on the importance of dental hygiene. She outlined the consequences of poor dental health leading to gum disease which could lead to serious infections in Diabetics. She mentioned that a good diet and regular careful brushing was necessary for maintaining good teeth and gums. There are suggestions that some types of heart disease may be consequence of poor oral care.

    Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 25 September.

    The Programme for the evening will be
    7.00pm Open for Tea and refreshments
    7.25pm Dr. Kirandeep Chana, Imperial College on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease.
    8.15pm Professor Johnsonton, Imperial College topic related to insulin dependent diabetes
    9.05pm Raffle
    9.15pm Close

    Venue:
    Montague Public Hall, 30 Montague Road, Hounslow TW3 1LD
    Montague Road is just off Hounslow High Street on the corner with Holy Trinity Church. The Hall is opposite Hounslow Police Station. There is ample free parking after 6.30pm in public car parks in Montague Road and Alexandra Road (the next road along, see map attached).

    Cost
    Our meetings are free, but we ask for a donation of £1 at the door to cover the cost of providing refreshments and buying a gift for the guest speaker.

    The official report on the meeting:

    Professor Johnston of Imperial College and Diabetes UK gave a very interesting talk on the protocols involved in setting research projects. He also dealt with some aspects of insulin dependent diabetes and stated that Type 1 diabetes usually affect younger people and type II diabetes usually affected older people but due increasing Obesity Type II diabetes was increase amongst younger people. He also discussed some reasons why some people may develop Type 1 diabetes but it was difficult to determine who will develop it.

    Kirandeep Chana outlined what Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease was and stated that it was disease of small air passages. It is on the increase and will soon be the 4th largest condition which will require treatment. It will have a big impact on NHS budgets in the coming years. She also outlined the fact that people with heart conditions and diabetic could be at more risk if they led a sedentary lifestyle. She outlined the benefits of exercise and a good diet.
