How worried should I be?

Hi apologies in advance if this is a bit long and full of questions but my GP has literally said nothing about my blood sugars etc. I had gestational diabetes and failed a follow up gtt test fasting 4.0 2hrs 8.1. Which is pre diabetes I think. Hab1c test was 31. I don't really know how bad it is I have been low ish carbing avoiding alcohol and all treats it was a very abstemious Christmas. I sometimes blood test yesterday fbg was 4.4 had porridge 40g oats with nuts and full fat milk was 5.4 at one hour and 4.5 at two hours. I saw a dietitian who said eat more carbs and have a small slice of cake every week. I have total ignored this but am missing the occasional indulgence. My BMI is 22.8 but the dietitian implied I should loose another half stone and should expect to be on medication but the only reason I know my results was in a letter.

I guess I'm asking how serious do you think it is should I expect to be on mess, is anyone else in a similar situation.

Sorry if its a bit random its been pretty stressful.

Hi and welcome.

Your hba1c is perfectly normal, as is your response to the porridge.

If your concerned, I'd just cut out sugar, cut down on processed foods and reduce portion of starchy carbs.

I don't think you have much to worry about.

I can't see a thing wrong with any of those results. They are all absolutely normal.

If you were already low carbing before your oral glucose tolerance test, this will have skewed the results. This test requires normal levels of carbs for 2 or 3 days prior to the test for it to work properly. I can sort of explain why if you want me to. Even then you only failed by 0.3mmol/l which is insignificant because of meter inaccuracies, and looked at alongside your HbA1c (which was excellent) I would say you are worrying over nothing, particularly in view of your own finger prick tests.

If I were you I would carry on as you are, have an occasional indulgence (maybe that small piece of cake once a week?) but keep testing to make sure you don't start to trend upwards.

The dietician was scaremongering. There are many T2s on here with much worse levels than yours but not on medication, and many others who started on meds, including insulin, that have managed to come off them all.

To answer your question, I wouldn't be worried.

or your reply

yes I was low carving before the gtt interesting that would have an impact info given after gestational diabetes was zilch so I just kept eating in the same way. Dietitian was super scary talked a lot of amputation and blindness. I like the testing idea me will keep going goers on track since my weight management record is poor and the motivation to stay healthy is definitely linked to good bs results for me. Thanks for you reply and the advice.
