Some few months ago I had my Db check up with the practice nurse who was really delighted with all my blood check results. However, after my recent admission to hospital with an attack of psuedogout I received a letter from my doctor to ask me to go in and see him. The problem apparently was a very low iron count for which I had recently been prescribed tablets but as they were giving me a lot of stomach pains I had stopped taking them but his immediate words to me was " did I know what was causing this?" ... I said that as I had been on a low calorie and low carb diet could that have had an effect?... but no.. he went on to say that it could be due to a stomach bleed because of long term Naproxen use but most probably was because I had cancer.. had I considered that?!
Needless to say I was more than a little taken aback but arrangements were made for me to have another blood test in a months time and to take things from there.
Blood test number two having been done I went back to the doctor for the result when I was told that my blood pressure was very high (news to me after the Db check) and I was suffering with kidney failure to which I replied that yes..I had been told that some couple of years ago but that it was all aging related... NO.. he says.. much worse than that you are two steps away from needing dyalisis! Then he asked if I was seeing a kidney specialist and he would arrange that straight away...which gradually turned into... take your Bp twice in the morning and twice in the evening, keep a record of it and come back in a months time and we'll take it from there! ... not forgetting I might add that not a word was mentioned about cancer!!
What would you do?
I am quite sure that if I complain or make some comment about this it will be that I misunderstood or I didn't hear him right.
Surely no doctor should be making these sort of diagnosis .. they are not specialists and after all these things should be looked into thoroughly before making these announcements.

Sorry if this doesn't particularly relate to having Db but I would appreciate some advice please.

Wow ! What a lovely Xmas present ! I think now you have had a little time to think, I would write down a list of questions. That way, you won't forget anything. You need to book an appointment with your doctor and ask him to go through everything you've listed. You want to know why he/she has made all these assumptions and how ! Then, you need to discuss a plan of action. Don't delay, phone tomorrow. It's not fair to leave you hanging with so many unanswered questions. Good luck !

Hi Foxglove

I agree with Mo. Get a double appointment with the best or your favourite doctor at the practice. Take a list and get some answers and referrals if necessary

Some doctors are very condescending to older people so be firm. If you have anyone you can take along then do so, if only for moral support.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on

Thanks for all the posts. I have decided that it's not worth my getting into a tis-was about it all. I am going off on my cruise as of tomorrow morning and when I see him again in January I shall tackle him about it and without fail bring up these so called diagnosis that he has made...AND if he doesn't come up with a satisfactory explanation I shall be taking it further and write to the practice manager for starters.
Thanks again and I'll let you know how things go. .. :eh:
