Hyperplastic vertebral marrow and red marrow reconversion

Hello I am new to the forum, which looks very informative and helpful. I recently was diagnosed with hyperplastic vertebral marrow and red marrow reconversion via MRI after chronic and acute back and leg pain. I’m wondering if anyone else has experience with this condition.

My brief background:
I was diagnosed 20 years ago with T2. Recently things went haywire and I was hospitalised with persistent BGLs over 30. Commenced insulin June 2024, had to keep increasing doses over the months to finally achieve ok control. Using a CGM over the last 2 months as I have major swings including some scary hypos. The CGM reduces my anxiety about hypos quite dramatically, particularly as I’d never had them pre-insulin.

Back pain:
After other scans, recently had MRI looking for potential nerve impact. Not surprisingly I have a bulging disc, but also suggests hyperplastic vertebral marrow and red marrow reconversion. Never heard of it, nor have my family and friends. GP says it is basically hyperactive marrow trying to produce enough cells and that it can be caused by diabetes. We havent checked B12, iron for a while, which I’ll do soon (I was initially hospitalised with unexplained severe anaemia in April but it subsequently improved). This is only one of some complex issues we are working through.

I havent been able asked the diabetes clinic for any information or insights they may have on it.

I haven’t been able to find much information on the condition, especially in connection with diabetes. If anyone has some info or experience, any help in pointing me to information would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi there @AussieJen . I don’t know anything about hyperplastic vertebral marrow and red marrow reconversion, but I want to welcome you to the forum. When we get these uncommon, rare disorders it can be hard to get any information on the internet. If any members are familiar with this, I’m sure they will respond. We are here to support you, even if there are no members here with this disorder.

Thanks Melgar

The forum looks great even if no-one else has that condition. I’ve read some useful information and threads so far. I like the way it seems so supportive and interactive. You also seem to have members around the world.

I recently changed city and I don’t have any real network here, although even in my previous location, I felt a little isolated at times as friends and family don’t really understand diabetes. I have been referred to a fabulous clinic, but there has been no interaction so far, with other patients.

Thank you and congratulations to those who have developed and grown this into what appears a thriving community.

This is something I hadn't previously heard of, and I found this paper which you might well have seen already - https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3529711/

It says -

Reconversion is a physiological response to increased hematopoietic needs of the body, including [68]:
  1. Non-medical conditions:
    • – smoking cigarettes (so called ‘heavy smokers’ >2 pack years) (Figure 2A–D),
    • – doing sports with a large oxygen debt (long-distance running, free diving) (Figure3A, B).
  2. Medical conditions:
    • – obesity and related respiratory disorders (OBPS) and diabetes (Figure 4A–D),
    • – chronic conditions related to anaemia (chronic infectious diseases, hemoglobinopathy) with a special form of reconversion: disperse red marrow hyperplasia (Figure 5A,B),
    • – patients treated with hematopoietic growth factors.

Thank you KennyA

I have read similar Information.

The only criteria I meet in that list is diabetes, although I did have severe anemia on first hospital admission, which was successfully treated with blood and iron infusions. I’m far too sensible, in my view, to run long distance or free dive! Apologies to any members who do so.

Thanks so very much for looking - that is very kind of you. If there is any interest from others in this condition, I’ll be pleased to post anything of use in my travels, although it seems to be fairly rare.

Google leads quite a few people to these forums so I'm sure any information you post will help someone else in the future.
