Is it normal to feel depressed after a hypo?

How do you stop weight gain associated with insuin/tightening blood glucose control?

I am so fed up right now

In my experience ((I use novamix, long acting and short acting) I get hypos after meals sometimes. I can't keep control at all I'm too high or too low. I get moody n depressed n tired all the time. I think the better control u have the less side effects u will have. Bit I am almost 6 years in n I can't

A hypo can make you feel depressed and weepy.

Yes, in theory you can have a hypo at any time. If you have one after a meal, that suggests the insulin and carb balance wasn't quite right.

Hi @Pauntiep
your description exactly fits a hypo following a meal experience in my opinion.
it means that your carbs eaten did not match the insulin dose given.

you should try and speak with your care team first to discuss any possible changes to your routine !!

Being insulin dependent can cause hypo's..

I've been a T1 for 30+ years and still stupidly thin... so it does not necessarily cause weight gain.

It really depends whether you lost weight prior to diagnosis.. it can I hear, be insulin related as it is a hormone, just that I've never had that problem. I've never ate a lot of carbs though. Only time I was pushed to I did put weight on. Many other reasons can honestly be associated to weight gain.. but its not worth beating yourself up... its just time needed to fix and to lose... it maybe that your whole body is feeling odd with depression, insulin, weight gain etc... but it is sounding like you are struggling.
I would suggest that you set a date in next few days to try and get balance restored....

Give yourself "me" time;
Log food, doses etc and if you need advice, you can always ask for it here... but give it a max of 2 weeks of monitoring and recording EVERYTHING!! go back to GP or consultant and ask for advice;

Hypos... how long you been Insulin Dependent?

What insulin are you using?

Yes I can get that too. In my experience it depends what carbs I'm having with my meal. I've discovered that vegetable carbs in particular are unpredictable with my sugar levels. Eg. I can hypo just over an hour later after eating vegetable carbs and I can equally be hyper too after eating them with the same quantity, type, and insulin dosage. I saw a dietician about it previously and I just got told well you probably should have a grain carb with your meal to avoid this. Eg. mix your carb type in your meal rather than all the same type.... still try and stick to the same quantity though (eg. don't eat too much carbs). I have to admit when I do what she said it does work better at preventing hypos. For me grain carbs seem more predictable.

Thanks for your replies. I've been diabetic 20+ years with poor control past 3-4 years resulting in change to bolus/basal insulin total 110 units per day.

Before insulin I was gettig glucose levels of 15+ but now average 5-8. Weight gain of 1 stone in last month - mostly round waist!

Exercising and low carb meals, but sugar cravings at night then no appetite in morning.

So frustrated!

What are vegitable carbs?

Is it normal to get a hypo AFTER a meal?
Yes. It's caused by too much fast acting insulin for the amount of carbs you've consumed. If this is a persistent problem for you then ask your specialist about the possibility of attending a DAFNE course. I went on one and it helped a great deal.

Is it normal to feel depressed after a hypo?
Yes. Hypos cause mood swings. It's **** but if you can stop the hypos you'll start to feel much better in yourself.

How do you stop weight gain associated with insuin/tightening blood glucose control?
The only way to stop weight gain is to burn of equal or more calories than you consume.

Hope this helps.

What are vegitable carbs?

That is any vegetable that contains fructose, glucose, and sucrose. Some of them have all these types of sugars in them... e.g.. potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrot, and broccoli. But pretty much all vegetables have some type of sugar/carb in them. The non starchy vegetables like onion, asparagus, leafy greens, cabbage, etc have less carbs in them.

Veg grown above ground has less carbs than root vegetables that grow in the ground.
