Hypos despite high BG readings

Hi,

I have posted before and have some success to report, I think. My Hbac's are apparently 6.1, is this good? Cholesterol 4.1, Bp 122/80 lost 1.5 stone in the last 9 weeks, exercise mainly, and average BGs are as follows: 30 day 8.6, 14 day 8.6 and 7 day 8.3.

I take one gliclazide 30mg mr tablets twice a day and one Metformin SR 500mg twice a day. No reactions anymore to the metformin or the gliclazide, which I was getting previously when taking the ordinary sort.

Anyway to get to the point. I am now getting Hypos, quite bad ones, shaking very badly, feeling dizzy, etc especially in the morning before I have even taken any pills and some-times shake so badly can't even do the BG test in the morning after I have got up. Once done I have found the BG was some-times as high as 9.3, the lowest being 5.2.

I usually wait an hour after getting out of bed before testing. But this AM the test said 6.3 and I was shaking like a leaf and needed to eat something as I felt very faint.

Do I need to worry, or should I just reduce the dosage a bit?

Hi Henry,
Firstly your HBA1C of 6.1 is very good - could be slightly lower, but still good.
What you seem to be describing is "false hypos". These occur when your system has been used to having high blood sugars for a long time, so that when they come down to what would be a normal level (in the 5s), your body becomes confused and sees this as being hypoglycemic. You display all the symptoms of a hypo even though you are not actually having one and you are not in any danger.
It is simply your body saying Hey, I'm not getting the sugar hit that I used to get so do something about it!. Whatever you do, don't give in - eventually the lower blood sugars that you are now experiencing (as shown by your HBA1C) will be accepted as normal by your body and the false hypos will disappear.

I agree with Dennis.

You can also get false hypo symptoms if your BG falls quickly too, so watch out for those moments too... Although im not sure how that works with a type 2.
