Hypos

Hiya, I'm a newbie to this so please bear with me.

I was diagnosed in 08 with Type 2 @ 20, put on metphormin immediately now up to 4 x 500mg tabs a day, 2 with breakfast & 2 with evening meal. I was only 38 but with a very strong family history, father, two uncles, aunty, 2 cousins all on my fathers side. My hba1c (if that's correct) is at an excellent level now.

My question is, if I don't eat my evening meal at a regular time I get symptoms of a hypo, so I test myself and the result is between 4 and 5 mmol/, so is there such a thing as being able to live/cope with a higher bg than normal?

Being nosey and it does help us here to give you a better answer....just what is your HbA1c level now ?

(a) The level that you feel the hypo symptoms is fine, I get the symptoms at around 4.5 mmol/l This means that you have good hypo awareness. Something to be recommended.

(b) Not quite sure what you are getting at here. Anybody can live or cope with Bg levels higher than normal, however what do you term 'normal.' Can you clarify this please ?

If I can remember, last hba1c was 6.7, which diabetic nurse said was good, but should be due another test soon.

As far as the term 'normal' goes, my GP says that 3.5 - 4.5mmol/l is the normal limit but I get really shaky, sweaty, weak, just not very well when my bg goes below 5mmol/l, I then have to raid the sugar jar to rectify this, which eases the symtoms enough so I can eat my meal.

To be honest I'm not sure what I'm getting at with this statement apart from asking 'is it ok, medically, to live with this level?

Personally that sounds good to me although you will get members who maintain that it should be much lower. I want my own to be around 6%. I am trying to get back down to that levels after recent Cancer treatment.

The medical opinion is that anything below 4 mmol/l is considered hypoglycaemic.....a hypo. Something you should avoid. So what you have been told may be suitable for a non-Diabetic....however, you are a Diabetic so it is not advisable to stay at that level.
Your body is giving you the warning signs that you are going too low and you need to respond by consuming sugar/glucose. That is exactly what I have to do sometimes to maintain, good Bg control.You need to make sure you do not miss meals of some sort as this is not really recommended as a Diabetic.

I am not certain if you have seen the NICE 2010 guidelines regarding Bg levels ? Here they are for your information.
Fasting (waking)............between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs post meals...........no more than 8.5 mmol/l.
If you can keep the levels post meal lower then so much the better, remembering the advice regarding 4 mmol/l as being 'the floor.'

Your GP should know all this ???
