Hi everyone need some advice if poss please

I am type 2, currenty on 2000g metformin (SR), plus one 80g tablet of gliclazide with evening meal. When i was first diagnosd my HBA1C was 10.3, last one was 6.5 which was brill :D

Anyway my problem is this, of a morning i have 1000g metformin SR with my breakfast which is usually toast or weetabix, but i am finding about 2- 3 hours later my blood sugar is dropping to sometimes as low as 2.5, causing me to have hypos at work which isnt nice :?

What i cant work out is why i have hypos round mid morning regularly esp if i have not had any gliclazide since the night before, i would of thought i would of been more high than low with the breakfast i eat.

Any adviice etc greatly appreciated

Hi

Apparently Glic takes between 1 to 4 hours to achieve maximum effect and has a half-life of 10 hours so would still have a small effect the following morning. I've recently been taking mine before an evening meal, 1/2 hour is recommended, to have some effect on the evening meal and slightly less effect in the morning. Well that's the theory anyway but I'm sure it's not that simple......

hiya thx for your reply :D

I'm gonna try just having half gliclazide when i am working and see if that works as i do a lot of manual handling in work (care assistant), and then normal one tablet when off. Dunno if it will work but worth a try lol

Your own natural Insulin production may be more efficient in the morning, some peoples are.

Maybe you should try taking a fast acting carb such as a drink of lucozade, just a little not a whole bottle, just before you start your shift. You should also try drinking plenty of water if you can to keep up your hydration on your shift.

The fact that you are doing a lot of heavy exercise probably uses up your energy before the longer acting carbs in Weetabix start to kick in.

ahh thats probably true Sue, i'll try the lucozade as well and see if that helps.
such a pain trying to get things balanced, either too low or too high or like today felt super fit and healthy and no lows at all, tho that prob cause i've had a day off :? tomorrow who knows!!!!!

Have you tried a lower carb breakfast?
I find if I have a high carb breakfast like muesli or toast when I go to work my levels go up fast and then drop down low.
Recently I have been having fruit (strawberries, blackberries, or banana), chopped nuts, flaxseed all mixed in greek yogurt. This is lower in carbs and doesn't raise my levels so high and I seem then to stay at a more constant level longer and not drop so low so quickly.
Everyone is different so it may be a case of experimenting, but this works for me and is very tasty.

Angie
