So I had a hypo at work, left the shop floor to have some lucozade and my manager says 'can you not wait? Your lunch is soon?'
I replied: not really, unless you want me to pass out? And he said oh you are a bit dramatic no?
Very annoying, obviously doesn't know what a hypo entails, sometimes we have to excuse people's ignorance as I don't suppose we knew much ourselves before we got diabetes.
Perhaps a quiet word in his ear about what a hypo feels like and the action you must take to get out of it might be in order.
print out something on diabetes and hypo, give it to him and your HR dept/or bigger boss. be as nice as pie about it, if you fins something about hypo and discrimination on the same page, it would be even better
Hi It is annoying, and as some have said, people are ignorant, especially of type 1, but that was a crass comment from your manger at that time. He should of just agreed and then asked you for a little chat later about the effects of diabetes including the hypo's and hyper's. Information in print is a good idea, it could be some 'light' reading for him whilst having his lunch
One very large distribution centre I worked in was brilliant and had instructions in the first aid room on how to recognise and treat diabetics having a hypo.
Some people need to be educated..some people and places are fantastic!!
