Hi
I was wondering if anyone here can help me?

For a while now i have been waking up loads during the night for a wee. I have been getting lots of boils (one of them has not healed after 5 months).

I went to my doctor who sent me for a fasting blood test about four months ago, this came back normal.

I have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) which is known to course type2 diabetes. I was prescribed Metformin by my Gynecologist to treat it. People with PCOS are at high risk of developing type 2. And this is thought to be a good prevention and also helps with the symptoms of PCOS. However as i could no longer afford the medication i had to stop taking it.

*The gyno clinic did test my levels at the time and thought it was boarder line.

Now i have given you a little history here is my confusion :) .

My mate (who is a brittle diabetic 1) was visiting this week and she tested my blood with the needle thingy, at different times during the day including first thing in the morning, my levels were coming up as between 7.8 to 9.5. The 9.5 was first thing in the morning b4 i had anything to eat or drink, 2 hours after my evening meal it was around 8. The 7.8 was before food at lunch time.

She said i should go back to my doctor and discuss it with him, but my doctor (who is the only one in the practice) is not very easy to talk to and can make me fell silly and a waste of time.

So do you think i should speak to him about these readings or am i just being silly/

Rude people! Not being able to do the things I want to do.
Welcome to the forum ,Purple moon.If you're fasting test was 9.5 I definitely y think you should go and see the doctor.A suggestion would be to buy a blood testing meter and take a few days fasting tests first thing in the morning.if these are all as high as 9.5 take the meter to the doctor as proof of what you are telling him and ask for a proper fasting blood test.If you can get an early morning appointment fast for that so he can take the blood there and then.

However as i could no longer afford the medication i had to stop taking it.
I'm a bit confused by this statement, why did you have to pay for this medication?

Sue, she probably had to pay because she hadn't been diagnosed as having diabetes. She does say that metformin was prescribed as a preventative measure and to help with PCOS.

Yes, you need to get tested by the doc. Finger prick tests are not a diagnosis.

A fasting blood test or a glucose intolerance test will be the 1st step. That being said, based on what you said, your friends tests suggest glucose intolerance rather than diabetes. The best person to get the diagnosis from is the GP, or even better, a Diabetes Nurse Specialist.

Steve,
You're right in that a finger prick test doesn't give an exact figure, but the reading won't be all that far out. Glucose intolerance is defined as a fasting BS of between 6.1 and 7.0mmol, so a level of 9.5 is way outside the glucose intolerance range and would suggest diabetes.

Ask around your friends, pharmacist and anyone esle you can think of to see if they can suggest a more clueful doctor. They should IMO at least have given you a GTT, fasting BG is often the last to go in many forms of Type 2, and PCOS is often associated with diabetes. The numbers you're showing now suggest you've probably been diabetic for some time and the muppet hasn't bothered to tell you.
