Strange that while I was diagnosed with Type 2 back in 2005 and promptly joined Diabetes UK, I never thought to join the forums. Ah well I'm here to put that right!

My diagnosis came out of the blue, in my 40's, leading a healthy lifestyle (marginally underweight for my height), normal healthy diet in which I've always avoided sugary foods as I don't much care for sweets & desserts. I did have a family history of Diabetes with my mother having passed away from diabetic complications and my elder brother also a Type 2 sufferer, otherwise both what I'd have called average healthy people in all other respects. After suddenly starting to get problems with blurry vision and chronic thirst I ended up at the doctor's surgery with a reading of 27 mmo/L. After a fasting reading of around 18 I started metformin but after 6 months of having normal to low readings I was switched to just diet & exercise. There then followed a pattern of being on and off the metformin (slow release variety) as my levels would rise and fall over the months.

Then about 18 months ago my levels shot up - anything from 20 to 28 for most of the time! There then ensued an almost year long tussle between my GP and the NHS to get me seen by a specialist and tested for monogenic diabetes (they kept refusing on cost grounds). Finally earlier this year they agreed to see me, and while a pre-test(?) indicated there was an even chance, they then diagnosed me as having slow onset Type 1 and I'm now awaiting the switch to insulin. Strangely enough I have been off all diabetes medication for the past two and a half weeks and my levels have never been above 8.7 with four episodes of hypos - just yesterday afternoon it was 1.9 (and boy I felt rotten)! So what my pancreas is up to is anyone's guess!

So there you have it - potted history and wondering what surprises my body is going to spring on me next?!
