Insulin Pump

Hi, I don't know if anyone has a pump but if there is I'd be grateful for any info. I've looked on the pumpers site but am still trying to find any information I can.
My nhs trust has ordered my pump and I'm awaiting it's arrival with a degree of trepidation!
For the past 18 months I've had bms of over 35 despite taking 300 units of actrapid and 100 units of glargine(lantus) every day as well as 3g of metformin.
The pump is my last hope.
Do they work for everyone or are there exceptions?

Hi
I am on the pump and it is great (Tony the tiger grrreat)lol ;)
I have had diabetes for nearly 10 years, had quite a long honeymoon period and then had trouble ever since. I went on the pump early September and have successully improved my control HBa1C before the pump was 10.2% it is now 8%. :D It is quite a daunting thought being attached 24/7 but it honestly doesn't get in the way, i rock climb regulary and have had no problems with it getting in the way, and it's pretty tough as i haven't smashed it to pieces ;) There is no way i would go back to insulin injections now, a cannula change every three days beats 5 injections a day. i also feel more free with my condition, i feel a hell of lot more in control and to finally see progress in pretty cool 8)
Good luck with it and enjoy it

Thanks Adele. It sounds as though it's the best thing the hosp has suggested. I've been waiting 3 weeks for it to arrive & am getting impatient lol. Don't want to ring them to find out what's happening cos I don't want to be labelled as a pain in the ****. I used to be a pain in the neck but people think lower of me these days:D
Am glad you like my cat. Have 7 real ones here who incidently won't come near me for about an hour after an injection. I can only assume its the smell that disagrees with them[:0]

Hey Fugs, i had to wait ages to get the pump after first being told, it think it was about six months in total which sounds awful but soon went, it had something to do with all the paperwork not sure of the details but it was worth the wait, but it sounds like you're not going to have to wait that long which is great.
It's funny about your cats not liking the insulin, mine doesn't seem to mind but he is losing a few marbles now :(

Sarah I know what you mean about the hospitals being slow. They told me the pump would take a week to arrive and that was just before christmas - was great while we were waiting to be seen the staff were wandering about with plates piled high with cakes & chocolate for their xmas party lol.
I thought what with xmas and new year the pump could take a bit longer to arrive but I've not heard a peep from them.
Apparently I've also got to meet the sales rep from the pump company which seems odd.

I know I must sound incredibly impatient but I'm desperate to get my life back. My sugars were measured today at 45.3 & I'm still walking around lol.
My hosp, which is supposed to be one of the best in the country, have tried everything they can think of to get my sugars down and they managed to get it down to 28 by having me on a sliding scale for 19 days.
I'm desperate for more than an hours sleep without going to the loo.
I restrict myself to less than 50g of carbs a day. No matter what nothing changes:(

I took your advice and rang the hospital Sarah.
Apparently because they don't think the pump will work, they have decided not to buy one. They have borrowed one from the company which they've got but they are now in the process of trying to negotiate a price for all the extras.
They have said that they have arranged for the rep to come in on the 28th.
In the mean time I've been told to increase my insulin - 150 units of actrapid three times a day and 150 of glargine (lantus) at night.

Hi Sarah, my consultant mentions u500 everytime I see him but there's a finite supply as they don't make it anymore.
Officially I'm type 2 but the hospital has got dispensation to give me a pump as I meet the criteria. The only hope left for me is a professor in Cambridge if the pump doesn't work. He specialises in Insulin Resistance. They're giving the pump 2 months to see if it works.
I'm actually starting to wonder if all this insulin is worth it. I'll party the day I'm manage to get a reading on my bm

hi, 2 months on the pump should make a difference, the thing about the sales rep, i was trained to use the pump by a rep from the company and she knew what she was talking about, i bombarded her with questions which my old nurse couldn't answer and she answered everything, my new nurse is a lot better though lol.
Good luck
