Interpreting Results

Hi to anybody out there.
I have just received my latest 3monthly results, and I have dropped from 7 to 6.2. The problem I have is trying to gauge just how good this drop is in terms of scale. What do you compare the scale to? Obviously any fall is good but I do not understand if this is very good or just ok.How big of a drop is 0.1? Eg If someone says they have lost 2 stone it is obviously significant, and would take time to put back on(normally!). My question is have I dropped by 2 stone or lost a couple of pounds?
cheers

I would say that's a significant improvement, well done!

A non diabetic's HBA1C would be in the 5s so you're heading the right way

Good result !

Anything under 7% is helping stave off future complications. The lower below 7% the better as Dollyrocker says. However.......in the scale of things it can be very easy to slip back into old eating habits and the Hba1c can suddenly jump back up.

Keep testing and watching carb intake, you are doing well.

ter57,

That's a excellent drop in your hba1c! Any improvement as Sue says will help prevent future complications, but a hba1c result doesn't give the full picture and what is more important is your day-to-day blood glucose levels, so do keep an eye on them and try and keep them within target.

Hi
Thanks for your quick replies. But it it all gets confusing. The last time I saw my GP(specialist in diabetes). He refused to give me testing strips on prescription, stating that the day to day testing was not the best way. And the 3 monthly test gave a far better result giving the broader picture.
The problem with that view as I see it, is that without the regular checking you have no way of checking how effective your exercise/diet control is working.Or heading in the right direction.Fortunately I have access to my mothers meter/strips(type1) and am able to check at regular intervals.
thanks

Here we go again ! Your so called Diabetes Specialist should know better.......any enlightened Specialist knows that the HbA1c is only an indicator showing the trend. It is not the best way by any means. Regular testing especially before and after meals is the best way. That shows what is actually taking place on a daily basis and will show the highs and lows that a HbA1c test misses out.

However testing for it's own sake without knowing what the numbers mean and what to do about the results is a pointless exercise. There is also the small matter of the cost which seems to be a bigger concern with many GP's/PCT's nowadays.......but they don't tell YOU that !

Ignore the GP advice about testing.......just get the knowledge about why to test, and how to react to the numbers. What to do......then astound your GP with your good results because you had the motivation to do something !
