Is it possible to have both Diabetes & Reactive Hypoglycemia

Hi there, this may be a strange queston but I am trying to get to the bottom of things after over a year, the Specialists still dont have the answers.I am supposedly Type 2 (? Mody) I was told by the Consultant at the DB clinic a few weeks ago, that I am the strangest case she or her colleauges have ever seen and my notes are always in the office as she keeps looking back through them.I have a great HB1AC, 5.7 I think, probably down to huge ammounts of exercise and not eating much, my problem is that I have both highs (as high as 18 ish) and lows (as low as 2.2) on no medication, this has been a nightmare, I can literally feel my sugars rising and dropping and I feel so ill, and have repeated bouts of oral thrush and sky high BP (on Ramipril).I have been put on Glicazide twice and then taken off it because my HB1AC is normal.Stange thing is,the lows have only ever stopped happening when am on the Glicazide, this is back to front and makes no sense, everyone is baffled. My Cortisol levels are too high, so I see an Endocrinologist next week as they think I may have Cushings Disease but I am not overweight (although do battle to keep it off).I just thought that if I have Reactive Hypoglycemia on top of diabetes it might make sense.Say an hour after a meal , my sugar will be say 16mmol, then around 11, 2 hours later, then 3 or four hours later will be 3mmol. Stress also plays a huge part in making my sugar drop like a ton of bricks.I am so tired of things and hope the Endo can shed some light on things.I would be so grateful to find anyone who has ever experienced the same thing or anything similar, just want to be back to my normal energetic self x

Hi there, do you have Type 2? You sound very similar to me.My DB consultant did agree with me when I told her that certain people on this forum had experienced low blood sugars before diagnosis and that it happens in the early stages of diabetes, despite some saying its impossible but she thinks something else going aswell on hence the Endo. Are there any diabetes drugs that actually control rather than lower the blood sugar levels, ie stop large spikes?Although I would have thought they would have left me on Glicazide as it was stopping my lows and highs ??? Just because I have a great HBA1C (down to my extra healthy lifestyle)I have huge spikes with every meal or drink etc, this cannot be healthy x

Re: Is it possible to have both Diabetes & Reactive Hypoglyc

Hi
Your story seems a bit like mine. Currently I am not classed as diabetic as my fasting glucose blood tests come back in the normal range. I am having more and more hypo's I have tried to work out what i have eaten to see if it is that but so far haven't found anything. I am seeing the endrocrinologist on 20 February and that was the quickest appointment that I could get. I can tell when it is low even before I have tested my blood. I was ill on 4 and 5 Jan and for some reason my blood sugar were high which I dont understand why as I hadnt eaten anything and had hardly any water those two days.

I hope you find out what is wrong with you. Have a great 2013.
Dee

Hi there thanks for the reply,I was due to see Endo yesterday but have a terrible virus and didnt feel it was responsible to go spreading germs around the hospital so put it off until the 8th Feb.Have they done any other tests for you? I have got high Insulin and high C peptide (glucose levels were 8) at time of test and High morning cortisol levels. They are talking about giving me a constant glucose monitor, bet thats fun, measures every 5 minutes but if thats what it takes!Like you I can feel my sugar both high and low, and a low will leave you feeling dodgy for the rest of the day.I have noticed something about Fasting levels though, when I wake my fasting can be say, 8 or 9, will take dog for a walk and an hour later levels wll be low.So when they do a fasting test in the hospital how accurate exactly is it, surely depends what time you got up and what you have done? Good Luck with everything please let me know how you get on x
