Since I have kidney stones, I have to drink, drink and drink to stop them reoccurring,

Its bad enough … with the in Metformin ..but are there any diabetes drugs which work but don’t rely on making you pee?

And which don’t affect the kidneys?

That's a great question! I'm curious, have you tried any specific dietary changes to help with the kidney stones?

Reducing sodium and increasing certain fruits and vegetables can sometimes make a big difference. As for diabetes medications, have you considered talking to your doctor about newer insulin analogs or GLP-1 agonists?

These might be worth exploring.

Hug for the kidney stones.
Never had them but hear it's painful.

I'd suspect as T2, that's how they all work.

It's flushing out the excess glucose, and or inhibiting the absorption, would be my best guess.

Obviously the kidney drinking requirements adds to that 'flow'.

Must make a good night's sleep a tad more difficult .

Best wishes .

I had problems with recurrent urine infections and my Dr put me on Mirabegron. This is supposed to stretch your bladder so you don't have tp pee so often. Seems to work to an extent. Maybe worth a try.

Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
Until recently my T2 meds didn't make me/require me to pee more than usual.
That is, Metformin and alogliptin.

I recently started forxiga which stops your kidney re-absorbing glucose so that you pee it out.
This does make me need to pee more often, including over night.

I am on Allopurinol for gout which frees off stuff from your joints into your blood stream and this need you to drink a good amount of fluids to help flush out the kidneys.
I struggle to drink enough at times because I generally don't feel thirsty.

So in answer to your question I think quite a few diabetes medications don't make you pee more.

I was told this as well, but was also told it pales into insignificance compared to the effect of drinking 3 litres of fluid (preferably water) every day. (In other words, it should be done as well as drinking the water and not instead of)

Strange, Before I got a kidney stone, I was on metformin for a few years and didn't notice increasing frequency. And if it doesn't increase frequency, why would it cause a problem?

You just have to drink much more with kidney stones water , tea, coffee. Which means you pee more.

Yes ..doesn’t seem to be a contraindication of metformin.

Common or very common

Abdominal pain; appetite decreased; diarrhoea; gastrointestinal disorder; nausea; taste altered; vitamin B12 deficiency; vomiting

You don’t get to talk to a doctor here really.

Unless it’s a serious issue

We get diabetic nurses... No comment.

They ALL seem to want everyone on Dapagliflozin.

Especially the one who changed my prescription - without asking,

- Even my partner who is under the magic 7.

Does anyone know why this is?

You really need to discuss this with your dr/dsn. But yes there’s quite a few that work in ways that don’t cause you to pee out excess glucose/make you pee more.

Have you exhausted the dietary options for managing the diabetes aspect? Have you tried low carb and keto?

I don’t pee anymore than normal 3/4 times a day.
Be that as it may that’s the way the drug is designed to work. Mileage may vary between individuals how much effect that has. Degree of insulin resistance, ability of our own insulin to cope, amount of glucose present in the first place to be dealt with etc etc

I'm a metformin user of many years duration @mousemat and have not noticed any increase in urine output.

Aside from drinkng plenty of water and water-based beverages like tea and coffee every day, have you tried any specific dietary changes to help with a history of kidney stones? For instance, patients are often advised to avoid foods with a high oxalate or sodium content, such as almonds, rhubarb and spinach.

Yeah - the short answer is yes!

Donning my teacher/writer hat:

The range of pharmaceuticals we have that are 'anti diabetes medications' work (to various degrees) by

Increasing your own production of insulin from your pancreas
Increasng the sensitivity of cells and organs to insulin
Decreasing the amount of glucose absorbed in your intestines and stomach – your digestive system

and, as you know - by

Expellng more of the excess glucose out of your body in your urine

I would say, If you can, have an appointment with your medical centre/diabetes nurse/GP where you discuss the range of diabetes meds that would suit you as in how your paricular T2 plays out, that you would have access to, or if applicable - are state funded.
