Hi all,

The whole diabetes thing is getting me confused slightly so thought I would post something on here and see if anyone can help me to understand what is happening.

I had a fasting blood test yesterday. By the time I got to the doctors I felt pretty rough and had the shakes and slightly dizzy. This is not unusual if I don't eat, it happens fairly often.

This morning is a normal morning where I eat and will quite easily drink 2 bottles of lucozade, chocolate etc! Thing is I'm now feeling slightly rough which is unusual but I normally got through bottles and bottles of either lucozade a day.

Now this is where I'm getting confused. I can't understand the difference in symptoms between hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia? I understand that one is caused by too high blood sugar and one is caused by low blood sugar but I don't really know which one I could be? Or is it a case of you might get the shakes and dizzyness with either and only a blood test would determine which way round this could be if either?

Thanks all.

hi Gareth
Was the fasting blood test you had yesterday for suspected Diabetes ?

Hypoglacemia as you know is low blood sugar, which will result in ,sweaty ,shaky, hungry, dizzy feelings to name just a few. A non Diabetic may regularly get these feelings even not on insulin or meds. I used to get these for years before I actually had Diabetes.

hyperglycaemia as you know is high blood sugar, and will make you feel ,lethargic, though at first a bit"hyper" ,sick, sometimes VERY hungry, just down right ill

I think anyone that was not Diabetic if they drank that much Lucozade and ate that much chocolate would have fluctuations of Blood sugars which were quiet big ....but within the normal ranges. And also would feel pretty rough..try and cut back on these things ,not good for anyone Diabetic or not.

I have a friend who is Hypoglacemic ,but not Diabetic, she has to eat little and often , small healthy grazing type meals....you could try this and see if cutting out the sugar overload helps to stabalise your Blood sugars while you wait for your test results.

good luck

Hi,

Yeah they told me the blood test was testing for diabetes. I seem to get a combination of the symptoms that you describe above. I suffer with dizzy spells, The shakes, generally tired and lethargic and at the moment pretty sick. The Shakes normally come first and then I know I need to eat or the other symptooms will come on pretty quickly after that!

It is fairly new to me so I think I should probably find other things to eat and drink. The problem I have is that when I start to feel rough I have an urge to have things like chocolate and lucozade as I know that when I have them I start to feel better again. Today I have maybe had too much too quickly and am feeling sick because of the result which as you say would happen to anyone diabetic or not.

Yeah I think that may be part of the problem as I have a tendancy to just not eat, Usual thing of getting up in the morning and being in a rush. And then having something about 3 hours after I have been up!! Trying to break the habit of a lifetime! lol!

Thanks for replying it's much appreciated.

I think you are a little confused. Hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia are not diabetes, and certainly not types of diabetes. Diabetes means that people cannot control their blood sugar levels through either lack of insulin being produced, or lack of ability to use the insulin. This results in hyperglycemia. On treating this, it is common for someone to then become hypoclycemic.

I don't know the result yet as I only had it yesterday morning. I need to ring them next week to find out what the results were.

I understand that they are not types of diabetes but I believe they are things caused by a number of things one of which could be diabetes. As I understand it you can have either of these especially the one which is low blood sugar can happen without diabetes.

My main point was that although they take the blood which I'm assuming will confirm whether there is a problem one way or the other? I'm guessing they will then have to carry out further tests to ascertain exactly what the problem is and that one blood test won't confirm anything, Only that there maybe a potential problem.

I have a tendancy as most people do with things like this to look too much at symptoms that can occur with things like diabetes! Kind wish I didn't beut I think that's just the way people are.

I was looking at something on the web and although I get the usual things, like the shakes, dizziness, etc etc I was reading something about black skin on your feet. I play football and for years have always suffered from hard skin on my feet. Always had it, had it treated a few times but it comes back so didn't bother again, it doesn't cause any pain so there wasn't any point. Although I noticed a few weeks back that part of the hard skin has now gone black!

I will just wait! Lol!

Probably not. If you're diabetic, that one test will tell them and you'll be started on some sort of treatment. That could be medication, or it could be diet and exercise only according to the levels they find. If you're NOT diabetic, then yes I guess there could be further tests.

Oh right ok. Thank for letting me know. I didn't think they would go on one blood test be as you say they do. Min you the tests are probably very reliable anyway.

Yeah if I'm not diagnosed with anything I think that would be more concerning than being diagnosed with something! ha!

My personal opinion is that I probably suffer from hypoglycemia to be honest and it isn't actually diabetes. Only think this because I get the shakes etc when I haven't eaten for a period of time so surely this would indicate blood sugar levels being too low?

Seems logical to me???!! ha!
