Hello

I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with an HbA1C result of 8.7, however I have some issues on the accuracy of this result and I'm hoping someone can help me.

My diet has been horrible, drinking about 1 litters to 1.5 litters of soda almost any other with a lot of bread for the year and a half. recently about 2 months ago I had malaria and went to the hospital, while there I decided to get a blood glucose test which was 130mg/dl. back then I did not think it was a big deal since I vomited some rice particle I ate the previous night that morning then I decided to take the test again the next morning and it was 107mg/dl. then I did another test 3 weeks later 3 -4 hours after taking 2 slices of pineapples and an orange and the result was 185mg/dl. for the next month I changed my diet and also regularly monitored my fasting blood glucose which has ranged between 80mg/dl - 98mg/dl.

So yesterday I decided to take an HbA1C and the result came back today, I was shocked to see that my HbA1C was 8.7% whcich indicates that my average blood glucose was above 200mg/dl.

my doctor is talking about putting me on medication but I'm worried since my fasting glucose is mostly at 88mg/dl - 98mg/dl.

I should also add that before the diet change and exercise my triglyceride was 354mg/dl but is now at 66mg/dl.

Hi @Golde Ghis , welcome to the forum.

What about doing some testing before eating and two hours after to see how different foods affect you?

It is possible that your fasting number is healthy but your food choices make you go high during the day.

It's also possible that something went wrong with your hba1c test, no way of knowing without testing some more.

Good luck, and let us know what happens!

There are also some funky blood conditions that distort hba1c readings up or down (eg anaemia) but they are fairly rare (I think),

Thank you for your reply

about the test you recommended, about a week ago I did this exact test, I did the test before eating and the result was 96mg/dl and 2 hour after eating the result was 102mg/dl. however at this point I had already change my diet and started exercising. the food I ate before the test was a plate of beans and some vegetables

The HbA1c test is measuring the average blood sugar over roughly 90 days, so it is taking nearly two months on the "horrible" diet and only one month on the health diet. So it is possible that the 8.7% result is correct, but another taken in two months may be much lower.

This is what I was thinking, I will ask the doctor for another test 3 months from now before considering any medications he wants to put me on and hopefully it turns out normal.

Thank you for responding to me.

Hi @Golde Ghis - you mention that you have changed your diet, could you elaborate?

There isn't necessarily a right and wrong answer, but it will help people on the forum to help you - there is a fair amount of collective experience of all types of diet and, let's say, eating regimes (ie, learning to eat differently, not less for a while)

As for my diet I mostly eat vegetables and Proteins. my diet often consist of beans, fish, chicken, eggs(mostly boiled), boiled peanuts, salad:(with cucumber, tomato, lettuce, avocado, onion, eggplant). I try to stay away from carbs and sweets as much as possible but when I do eat them I turn to eat fruits with low GI like guava. however some times I eat potatoes chip I make myself(only in moderation).

yesterday I a plate of salad, some dates fruit, then took 1 and a half glass of juice and then took my BG 2 hours later and it was 108mg/dl.

I'm still experimenting and looking to add new options into my diet.

also I do intermittent fasting some days of the week which is also beneficial as my new diet is expensive where I live.
