As the title says, my husband and I have just found out that we are pregnant. Very early stages - about four weeks. We are both over the moon as we have been trying for some time. I have to be honest, though, I'm a little scared. Good scared, but scared all the same! :)

I will be calling my doctor tomorrow to get an appointment as soon as possible. My diabetes care is provided through my GP so I'll make sure the appointment covers both.

Feeling pretty normal at the minute, and blood sugars are sticking around the 5-7 mark. My last hba1c was 53, which I was a little disappointed with. At he time, I was having more highs and lows than usual. Doing injections manually as opposed to being on the pump.

Guess I am after some advice, really. Any help would be much appreciated! How did diabetes affect your diabetes? Did you have extra appointments/scans? Did you decided to go on the pump once you found out you were expecting?

Hi @Elc1112 and congratulations :)

Have a read round the threads in this section, and you'll see lots of pregnant ladies and healthy babies :) A pregnancy with diabetes is hard work - lots and lots of testing and adjustments to meds - but it's very do-able.

Can I ask why you don't see a consultant? As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I phoned my DSN at the hospital and within a week or two was seeing a whole team of people - midwife, DSN, consultants, etc. Diabetic pregnancies are classified as high risk (nothing to worry about - it just means extra care :) ) so you have extra scans and see a team specialising in diabetic pregnancies. I found all the care very reassuring :)

Are you taking the 5mg tablet of folic acid?

Hi @azure,

Thanks! Still seems a bit surreal but super excited :)

The GP practice that I am registered with has two in-house diabetes consultants, as well as a diabetes specialist nurse. I get referred to the hospital etc for my retinal screenings but the majority of my diabetes care is delivered via the GP surgery.

I am on folic acid already, and have been for a few months now.

I thought there not be extra checks. Good to know! Like you, I am sure I will find them reassuring.

I'm doing everything I can do ensure my blood sugars stay within range and so on. Hopefully that will help me reduce the risk of any possible complications :)

Your GP surgery sounds well-staffed for diabetes. :)

Yes, staying in range as much as possible is crucial, but don't panic if you get a few highs. It's pretty much impossible to be,perfect all the time, especially later in pregnancy when insulin resistance increases greatly. Early on, you may have unexpected hypos, so watch out for those and keep hypo treatments nearby.

Test, test and test - that's the key :) I'm on a pump ( I was before pregnancy too) and it does make adjustments easier, I think. My basal insulin almost tripled by the end of pregnancy! Early on though, you may even have to reduce your basal if you're having lots of hypos.

Most importantly, enjoy your pregnancy :)
