Ketones and Glucose both present in urine dip test

On a low-carb/keto diet and run 6 miles a day 5 times a week to manage my T2 and something I noticed has happened today which I’ve not seen before. Did a urine dip test and ketones were showing which is normal for me with this diet , but my glucose reading was also elevated. Never seen this before because normally there is zero glucose when ketones showing, Is it possible for both readings to be elevated?

I will confess though , I had a piece of chocolate shortbread with a coffee this afternoon which was quite naughty, a couple of hours before I took the dip test so it may be just a spike but will be interested to know what other people think. I will keep an eye on it and test again later tonight.

Are you on medication for your diabetes? If so, which ones?
Do you have a glucose meter and can you test blood glucose?

If not on specific medication, you should only pee out glucose if your number is above approximately 11 mmol/l, so it's likely you went higher than that, unless you are on an SGLT2 inhibitor (medication ending in flozin).
If you're normally on a keto type of diet, this could be the cause of seeing ketones. Do you usually see ketones when doing a dipstick test or is this unusual for you?

One of the problems with dipsticks is that they look into the past. So I guess it could be possible that you see the dietary ketones from before the shortbread, and the glucose from after the shortbread.

Testing later tonight again makes sense to me, unless you feel unwell or are worried. In that case, please call for medical advice.
DKA isn't something to joke with, so please don't ignore any symptoms if you have them.

I’m not on any meds, pre-diabetic and diet controlled with extensive exercise. I had a large cappuccino and chocolate shortbread at Costa today . Very naughty I know. That would’ve been packed full of carbs on reflection .I normally have some level of ketones in my urine because of a low carb diet and the heavy exercise I do without any major issues.

Just done a second test and no ketones now and a much lower level of glucose so it’s on the way down. Looks like a naughty coffee and chocolate shortbread has knocked me out of ketosis so I will learn my lesson.. 6 more miles to be run tomorrow and continued Low-carb I think will put me back into ketosis in no time.

Thank you for the really good advice also that one of the problems with dipsticks is that they look in the past. I think it was definitely the case that the dietary ketones from before the shortbread, and the glucose from after the shortbread were showing

Glad to hear the ketones are gone, which they should after your high carb snack (which sounds delicious!). Proves you produce insulin to eventually deal with high BG, even if slow. :)

If I were you, I'd be more interested in my blood glucose levels than in dipstick results for glucose/ketones, have you ever considered doing some regular testing on that around meals?
