Ketones

Hi all. I have read a bit about ketones, and how they are produced when you stop burning ingested fuel and your body begins to use it's fat reserve. Are there any ways apart from a urine sample, to know if that is happening? For the last couple of days I have had a very peculiar taste, metallic would be a way to describe it. I am not sure what my weight is, I plan to get weighed at the surgery next time I go, so can't even work it out via weight loss.

Thanks in advance.

The metallic taste is certainly one way to tell and so is a bloaty feeling, tiredness or going off food. These symptoms do disappear after a day or two and are usually replaced by a feeling of well being and energy. :)

Yes lol. I could describe how I feel as a puffed up weeble. Guess it's the ketones then. Woo-hoo roll on weight loss

Thank you.

One other thing, I am eating a lot less calories than is recommended, and warned my body will go into 'starvation mode'. Is this a problem especially seeing as the diet I am eating now to cut the calories will be a lifetime change?

You can buy ketostix [for dipping in urine] very cheaply from a pharmacy.
Hana

I bought some Ketostix today, and according to the reading I have no Ketones in my urine. How could this be. Am I still not eating too much and my body is only using what I am eating? Today I have had very, very little, it's odd.

My diet today:-

Cucumber
Red Onion, 2 thin slices
Spring Onions
Chicken Breast, meat only, cooked, roasted,
2 Medium Boiled Eggs, 2 eggs
Organic cooked beetroot
Feta Cheese
Iceberg Lettuce
Tomatoes

I'm not sure how long it takes Defren. How long have you reduced your carbs?

I can only give you my experience. The beetroot would take me out of ketosis and give me a carb craving and the only way I can stay in ketosis is by eating far less than 30g a day and avoiding root veg.

Hi Defren! I'm a bit confused....I get Ketones in my urine but my GP has told me to get medical advice if they go above trace as they could mean something nasty above that so why are ketones good for you but bad for me as we have the same illness?
I'm not being funny or nothing but I'm just puzzled.

Hi defren ...
Love your diet !!! Its great ... [I can tollerate all except the onoins ]
Ketones strike me when I go ' off ' my usual eating plan or routines... [which is extremely rare!] or I am ill with an infection.
These are the only links I have found, plus get very bloated and headachey is another signal they may be up .
They have only been bad 'dark purple' on the ketone teststick once, - I was ill at the time though.
Hope this helps?

I eat less than 30g of carbs a day, today has been 18g and I won't have any more today. It will be three weeks next Tuesday since I started low carbs, and am always 30g of carbs a day or less. It's all very confusing. According to my fitness pal, beetroot has no carbs, But - ah.... this could be it, according to my new Collins little gem carb counter it has 8.6g. That takes my carbs to 26.6g today. No more beetroot.

Defren, how much water are you drinking?
I stay in ketosis, on and off and find that ketostix are pretty useless really. They only tell me I am in ketosis if I am not drinking enough!
Bigfatpaulie, ketones in your urine is dangerous if your BG is high. It is fine if your BG is within acceptable range. :)

Ketones in your urine show that your body is now burning stored fat and not just what you are eating, so they are good. I eat a very minimalist diet, I suspect few could do it, but it works for me, and I love all the very low carb foods. There is an illness called Ketoacidosis, that is serious, but not ketones in urine. Hope that helps a little.

I don't have the raging thirst any more, I drink only Earl Grey tea with Flora por activ milk. Perhaps all in all about 8 cups a day. I do add the milk totals to my carb intake.

Any replies help, thank you - I am still very much learning. I want to shift some weight to help with managing my diabetes, that is why I am going to the lengths I am. Thank you :D

Two different things, ketosis and ketoacidosis. As a diabetic you would use ketostixs to test for the latter.

Ali

So Ketostix are only used to test for ketoacidosis? Now I am confused :?:

What does myfitnesspal say about tomatoes?
They are a fruit after all.

wiflib

The sticks will measure any ketones in the urine. They don't differentiate between fat burning and ketoacidosis.

I have the darkest purple whenever I test and have done for quite a while.

3g of carbs in toms according to my fitness pal 4.7 in my little gem carb counter? That's a huge difference between the two figures especially when VLC as I am. Which figures are right? I think it's my little gem carb counter.
