Laser in both eyes now

Hi friends

I'm type II and have had several sessions laser now in the right eye for retinopathy. At the most recent check, I was told the left eye is now proliferating and I need urgent laser surgery in both eyes.

I have two real concerns/questions:

1/ Last time it REALLY hurt in the right eye, and halfway through my eyes shut down completely- I could only see solid green! I could still move my eye as instructed and doubt the surgeon even realised, but it scared the living s**t out of me- anyone know what on earth that was?

2/ I've little if any right peripheral vision left, so is this likely to be the same for the left eye and do any of you have any experience of this/ tips for the worried?

Thanks, folks, as I know these forums can be helpful!

Never experienced the solid green effect but it does all become dark in the vision for a few hours after treatment. I had a few sessions of laser in my right eye but my sight is still good enough to pass the field vision test required by the DVLA, it would depend on the amount of laser burns they do in your left eye and where the new vessels are growing which will determine how much peripheral vision you lose.

You could ask for anesthetic eye drops next time you have the surgery, I took painkillers several hours before and leading up to the session which helped a lot with the pain, Ophthalmologist said it was fine to do so but you may want to check first.

Good Luck!

If I have intense laser reatmen I always experience a solid block of white or red for several hours afterwards.
The more laser you have tehn the more sensitive your eyes tend to become.Having said that, I really don't think anyone should experience Sharp pain from laser. if hat occurs the laser may be too intense and he operaor should turn it down.
My retina was severely damaged by too intense laser. I don't say this to worry you but , as with everyhing else people differ in their sjkill at delivering laser treatment and onvce damage is done it is too late.
nother reason why you may experience pain is because the laser machine may be old. The newer machines are more "comfortable " for patients they say .
I can remeber patients refusing more laser treament at my eye clinic beore hey replaced he old machines.

Its welll worth discussing yur disconmfort beforehand . You may just be extremly sensitive . I can't see how there could be any objection to you taking pain killers . Some people have to have a general anaestheic before laser.
naestheic drops might be a different mater.

Sorry I can't help with the last par of your question.

BIG thanks for this, folks: I suspect it was quite intense laser- my peripheral vision is pretty much gone on the right, and the pain was impressive last time.

I amy indeed be sensitive- I do tend that way- but the painkiller thing is one I'm going to use this time.

Again, many thanks.

:)

I had green blocking my vision after laser and was told it is the normal reaction of the eye to having strong light shone directly at it. Apparantly it is not harmful. With regard to pain my ophthalmologist says that we have nerve endings at the back of our eyes but there purpose os unknown. If the laser hits a nerve you will feel it to some degree

That should be 'their purpose'! Spelling errors when using my phone annoy me but am blushing at that unforced error!

Hi.

I have proliferative retinopathy in both eyes. I've had two session on my right eye, both of which I found a bit painful and it took a number of days for me to be able to go out without shades on, everything was so glary.

I've had my first session on my left eye a few weeks ago and was dreading it. I was pleasantly surprised, it was no where near as bad has the right eye, even though I'd the same number of "zaps" as in previous session with the right. Things seemed to improve quicker in the left too post op, I was able to sit with the curtains open a bit in the room later that day, which I couldn't have done with the right.

What I'm saying is; in my experience, just because it's sore in one eye doesn't mean it's going to be the same for the other. I've heard that as you get more sessions it can become more painful when they zap old scar tissue, perhaps that's why your last session on the right was particularly sore. (Worth remembering too that you can ask them to numb the eye for you if it's getting too sore to cope with.)

As for only being able to see green; I've no idea. But would def mention it to the specialist when it happens so they can reassure you why it's happening.

Best of luck with your treatments!

You are fortunate to be able to see them. I can't see mine at the time[because of maculopahy} but often can later.
Someimes I go back and alter them if totally illegible but hope readers will bear with me . Sometimes I am ok but at others...

It took a very long time for me to bring myself to post despite the errors. I am just thanful I can read posts-.wih the help of my trusty magnifing glass- hasn't;t always been the case,,

Hi I only had laser treatment on my right eye (the bad one) up until last week and I had to have urgent laser to my left eye. Even though it was the first time for my left eye, I had 2 lots in one go and it was uncomfortable and painful at times, I asked doctor how many shots I had and he said, 1, 337. I could hardly see afterwards and he went and got me a cup of water, I don't want to go through that again in a hurry.

I do sympathise with you and the other members who are having or have gone through eye procedures, it can be unpleasant.

I wish you good luck and keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Best wishes RRB
