i am type 2 on insulin steroid induced..
Last year.. i was in hospital for an allergic reaction.. but they didnt taper down the tablets and consequently went into overdrive and had lots of hypos.. and was admitted to hospital.. i was told to keep eating jam and bread and jelly babies god i hate them with a passion...
Despite eating what ever i wanted i kept going into hypo mode until my body could take no more.. think it was just after lunch and with the amount of lift drinks and tablets and glucgel i should have been climbing on the roof...swinging from the curtains.. but i was crashing again and i called the nurse and he said i am ust on my way to check your levels...
Within a couple of mins.. my levels crashed and i remember a lot of nurses around me and he came back with another lift drink as i sat up in bed, felt nothing, felt fine.. no awareness.. then he passed me the drink and i held it and i could not move it was like a paralysis.. i remember him shouting at me to drink to drink it and i managed to say i need to sleep.. and the last thing i remember is him lifting my hand to my mouth and pouring the drink down my throat but my body had stopped playing the game and then within seconds i went unconscious.. as it was daytime there was a lot of drs and nurses around and the crash team were called.. i could hear everything that was going on just could not move ..
i am very hard to cannulate, and now my body had just gone on total strike.. and i could hear shes is unresponsive.. we cant get a line in yet i could feel them trying and had oxygen on.. and they kept talking to me all the way through it... they say hearing is last to go... but despite trying to open my eyes which felt like iron bars i couldnt ... again they tried glucogel but it sat in my mouth like superglue... then 2 lots of glucagon injections and again i heard shes unresponsive then things started to happen quickly when i felt the intubation tubes go down my throat.. and heard one of them say we need to bring her family in shes totally unresponsive and they called my hubby in... By now i had stopped breathing and the ventilator was keeping me alive.. and i heard them say do we do an IO or break her leg.. we need to get through to the marrowfat in her leg.. to get glucose in...
They ended up doing an IO.. They drilled through my leg bone to get to the marrow and put a bag of glucose in.. I remember letting out a pitiful scream, and i heard one of the junior nurses saying has she died.. i remember thinking no i am still here i aint died.. but still couldnt come round.. i could hear the nurse explain no they drilled through her leg bone which wasnt painful but going through the marrowfat is.. they tried a 2nd bag and slowly i saw a glimpse of daylight.. again they were talking to me all the time and said give us a sign you are coming round nod your head.. well i thought i was nodding my head but heard a doctor say she is fitting so i thought i better stop nodding.. within 15 mins my eyes were open and i was coming around and had cardiac machines on me as apparently after respitory arrest normally follows cardiac arrest...
The care i got was 2nd to none and very greatful they got me back and so happy to see my hubby...
Now NICE say i am prime candidate for Libre.. however local ccg said its funding issue.. i fit the criteria and its now with pans medical that covers north west areas to see if type 2 diabetics can have it.. but its not a funding issue, they spend over 300 a month on my testing strips v 100 for libra...
Fast forward to this year.. i was put on ozempic and was doing really well until i went up to the highest level and bang i went into full anaphylaxsis reaction allergic reaction.. went to local hospital and explained its progressing but was told 60 hour wait to see a dr.. 126 people on a tuesday afternoon sent in by 111 or gp.. by now i could feel itching all over face and it was progressing towards my lips which is when i take my epipen as i know its going to go further.. my face was swollen and throat.. i told the receptionist and she shrugged her shoulders and said sorry.. i remember ringing hubby and saying get me to the hospital i prefer am on limited time and its progressing fast.. i took epipen on way.. and it had no effect.. we got to the next hospital pretty quickly.. i was ready to use my 2nd pen and i spoke to receptionist and squeaked out i am now in full anaphylaxsis.. i was put in triage straight away and resus came for me and anaesthetic team were down.. and more drugs given but things were not going right and 10 mins later anaesthetic team were back saying if it gets worse we will have to take you to theatre and intubate you and take you to intensive care.. my voice was going but i said please no sure it will settle down and he walked off with a smile, saying see you soon.. things progressed and by now lost my voice and he said we cant wait any longer we dont know how far your tongue and throat is swollen inside so was taken to theatre and put to sleep.. was petrifed as now my voice had gone and i quickly squiggled out a note to hubby incase i didnt make it telling him how much i loved him and our pets.. Intensive care was brilliant and they kept hubby informed all the way.. and they took over my insulin.. spent 5 days in intensive care and was stepped down to a ward for three weeks but here is the problem once i was off the steroids my levels started to go low again and a few times they woke me up at night and i was having hypos again and normally i would have slept on for another 3 hours if i was at home.. i started to have anxiety over these, not something i had suffered from before..
i am now at home and finished tapering off the steroids and my levels are coming down but i am not eating that much to be honest and have ensure fibre drinks and normally when i am on steroids i want to eat everything in the house and it hasnt happened.. i was on a gastro tube for 3 weeks been fed.. and have lost all appetite competely but the ensure drinks make sure you get everything you need.. guess it was i had a rough time as the ventilator tubes that go in your mouth normally were pushed down my nose and was warned if we cant get down there we will go through your throat.. but after they pulled them out i was coughing up blood and sneezing blood for three weeks.
i just dont get why i am been denied this like many other people.. esp when you are having hypos at night.. i do have a very complex disability and allergies seems i am allergic to the world.. one of my friends said to me other night we have to get a big bubble for you .. and i replied knowing my luck would have acrylic in it.. well seeing my specialst tomorrow so will take the libre and see if they can help me get it set up if not will ust get onto the company to help me because my levels are dropping now.. and last thing i need is to go to low again..
Anyway despite been able to eat anything i kept hypo all day till after dinner i checked my levels and shouted the nurse over he was brilliant.. i said here we go again..
