lazy or good plan

All,

I will be getting my 2nd HBa1c test Apr 2nd, I have changed my diet DRASTICALLY and my readings suggest to me I will have reduced it well. (Will be GUTTED if I haven't)

Well, here's the thing. I said I would improve readings with diet AND exercise. I go to Zumba 1 hour per week, have a totally sedentary job.

I had planned to increase my exercise but haven't got round to it and now I'm thinking, well I'm doing well on diet alone why not keep something back. I've got somewhere to go if BGs increase i.e up the exercise to stave off tablets?

Am I kidding myself?

thanks

Mary x

Exercising everyday (if you can ) promotes all-round good health so I would exercise more than 1 hour a week, even 15-30 mins each day is enough to keep you reasonably healthy.

Probably but you have the same thoughts as me

Seriously I think you have to uncouple BG's and "E" in your thinking.

"E" is undoubtedly good for you and will reduce your CVD chances etc and makes some people feel good (weird in my opinion  ) but like you I'm not convinced "E" is necessary for good BG's or even weight loss if you've found and are sticking to a good diet. Can't you do what I do and just walk around a park for an hour a few days a week? That's not "E" in the strictest sense but quite enjoyable past time especially with spring arriving and the clocks going forward next weekend.

Sorry to say this, but I'm voting lazy.

Doing an hours worth of exercise a week is nowhere near enough! Regardless of whether you are diabetic or not you should be getting at least 30 mi urea a day, even if it's just a brisk walk. Taking up zumba is great and it's definitely a step in the right direction bit you need to be doing more.

I usually exercise everyday. That might be a workout at the gym (usually 90 minutes), a spinning or body combat class, bike ride (30 miles plus) or a run. It helps keep my sugars under control, keeps my immune system in check, my blood pressure low etc. It keeps mr fit and healthy. I haven't been able to exercise at all (apart from walking) for the past few weeks as I had to have an operation. I feel lousy for it, I really do. I feel so much better in myself if I am exercising.

Eating the right food is only half of it. You need to be more active if you're going to see any real long-term benefit. Try and find sone more classes you enjoy. Or join two zumba classes a week. The gym I go to offers bokwa, which is another dance style class. Alternatively, something like legs, bums and tums, or body attack, or aqua aerobics... You could also try swimming or even long walks. If you can find something you enjoy it is much, much easier! I tend to favour the high intensity workouts bit I know that doesn't work for everyone. Finding an exercise buddy also really helps.

If you can up your exercise you'll feel better in yourself, become more toned and it will help with the weight loss. I've always managed to keep my BMI below 23 but there is absolutely no way I could do that with diet alone.

Ps apologies about the appalling typing in my above post. iPhones are just not well designed for typing long messages. Or maybe my thumbs are too big?!

Really am sorry to here about the op and hope you are getting better and even appreciate you feel lousy and like exercise ...

... but that sounds like hell on earth to me sorry

me too if i'm honest,

I've had the exercise bug in the past , never sustained it and just can't be bothered if I'm honest.

So far since mid dec ive lost 19lbs and brought my BG's right down.

Just thought I might keep something back cos if I went hell for leather straight away where else can I go except meds?

Lol. Each to their own I guess I find it so hard to sit still so I find I need something that's quite high in intensity to motivate me. What works for me will by no means work for everyone else. The point I was making is that you need to find something that works for you and something that you can stick to. We all need exercise to keep us healthy, whether its a 60 mike bike ride or a walk around the local park - it all counts.

I appreciate that my exercise regime (or torture regime as some have put it) is a bit full on but it works for me.

I'm doing very well after the op thank you. Struggling to sit still and rest but I'm getting there. I am such a terrible patient!

A walk is good exercise no doubt.
Exercise is I think very much asscociated with glucose levels. It reduce insulin resistance and may also alter the way fat is stored. So my vote is to go for the exercise as well.
This video is by a person who herself has diabetes (T1) and spends much of her time researching the effects of exercise on T2

Elc1112 hope you can get back to your regime really soon!

Phoenix - yes I know, my T1 son tells me the same thing! We spoke the other night about when we have both dieted "enough" that we might (and I mean might) don the lycra. Until the weight has gone though can't see the point in humping and huffing the excess baggage around to be honest. Have actually lost over 15kg in 12 weeks so I must be doing something right, just a few more kilos to go and I'll be back under a 25 BMI. When I've done that I'll look at the "E" thing again. Thanks as always for the interesting stuff.

I love the fact that you call it the "E thing". E for exercise, or evil?!

15kg in 12 weeks is amazing - well done you!

but it's not all about diabetes MaryJ, exercise has so many other health promoting benefits and doing just a short session each day is one of the best things you can do to keep healthy.

Before my stroke and diagnosis of diabetes I was a total couch potato, but I do love my exercise now and usually do at least 2 hours on the days I don't work and about 1.5 hours on the days that I do work. It just makes me feel good - it must be the exercise endorphins flowing

I walk, do aerobics and cardiac workouts and have just started Zumba workouts.

Hi

Exercise every day ( if you can ) walk or cycle too work.
you will see a big change in your blood levels when you do this

thanks for the comments

will take them on board ....................... soon promise

in fact, have had a wander today

Good to hear, Mary

You're more than welcome to borrow my hyperactive puppy for a few weeks if you want. She let's you know every few hours that it's time for a walkies and she is impossible to ignore!

I'd be interested in your results MaryJ

My husband has significantly lowered his BG's by low carbing and consistent regular exercise.

We walk usually about 30 mins per time, about 1.5 to 2 miles after dinner and it makes a big difference to his readings.

Whether it will remain that way I don't know. His hope is to get off the meds, but I'm not so sure we will be able to keep the BG's down, we'll see I suppose.
