I have no experience of this lister, what did your gp say? I do know that ramipril is given to prevent and treat kidney conditions.

What can happen is that when you have raised blood sugar levels above 13mmol/l then your kidneys begin to process the sugar in your blood... now your kidneys are like a sieve and normally water and salts can pass through.. my understand however is that glucose is a larger molecule and therefore has to be forced through the sieve, after a while this can damage your kidneys and allow larger molecules such as proteins to pass into your urine. This forcing glucose through the kidneys can be made worse by high blood pressure.

What Ramipril does is to reduce your blood pressure thus reducing the pressure on the kidney's 'sieve'.. you can further help your kidneys by reducing your blood glucose down to 'normal' levels.

As to should you be concerned... well it's a reasonably common side effect in people with long term diabetes or those that went a long time without diagnoses.. for the most part if it is caught early then it shouldn't present problems for a diabetic with good control. As with everything diabetes however if left unchecked and not looked after then eventually it can lead to less desirable outcomes in this case kidney failure. You really need to discuss the results and there meaning with your doctor.

Customer helplines that use recorded menus that promise to put me through to the right person but never do - and being ill. Oh, and did I mention customer helplines :)
Hi Lister, sorry to hear of your problems and dont know if you should be concerned or not but I do know that as well as helping to lower BP Ramipril can help to protect the kidneys, I had another BP med swapped for Ramipril after diagnosis when I suffered a heart problem and the meds were swapped by my cardiologist who was very keen that I should take Ramipril.

Hope things work out for you
