Hello, I wonder if anyone knows a good diet & fitness consultant in London. I've been Type1 for last 3years and find that increasingly I have to stay off carbs (even good ones) and go hungry. I do 30minutes cardiovascular 3 times a week but even this doesn't move my sugar down. On insulin 6units morning and evening. Thanks for any advice and suggestions!

I hope you find a fitness consultant. In the meantime, perhaps some of our Type 1 folk can give you some advice about diet and insulin.

Take care

Doug

Hi @AgaRosa what sort of insulin regime are you on? All the cardio in the world won't bring your blood sugar down if the problem is lack of insulin. You don't need a personal trainer (who will have almost no clue about diabetes) you need to speak to your doctor about an insulin regime that better suits your lifestyle - I would suggest looking into basal bolus + carb counting.

Hello Both, many thanks for your responses. I am now injecting 6 units twice daily. I have asked my hospital consultant but she thinks I am doing absolutely fine and, since I am only on such low dose of insulin, don't really need any training on carb counting. I am now trying to figure it out myself (because obviously when I eat too much carbs I feel sluggish and when I don't eat them at all I get hypos and don't last for longer than 3 hours without food). So, its all trial and error. However, I've seen a blog by a diabetic who is also a fitness consultant and she had some useful tips. She lives in the US and can do consultation via skype but am not so keen on this method of communication and would prefer face to face. As I feel I am getting so little support from my doctors I am prepared to pay for some help to get my regime worked out. I thought that posting on the Forum would give me more guarantee of finding someone with good credentials but perhaps the American coach is rathern unique....

@AgaRosa, how much do you want to pay. I can certainly put you in touch with some professionals who can help.

What I note is that you talk about going hungry. Have you looked at eating an Lower Carb Higher Fat diet? It would mean that you wouldn't suffer from hunger in the same why.

It's interesting that your consultant has said what they have, I'd suggest that the conversation you need to have with them is that you are unable to live the lifestyle that you want on the regime that you are on. Exercising on twice daily injections is pretty hard and if you are struggling to lower bg levels then you really need a different regime.

Hi Tim2000s, Thanks a lot for your message. I think I am following the high fat (very) low carb diet - I eat lots of eggs, cheese, meet, butter, all full fat stuff, lots of veggies, tiny amount of fruit. This does not make me feel full at all. I am happy on 2 slices of Rye bread or some buckwheat but then my BG stays over 8 for more than 4 hours and I feel sluggish sometimes. It may be a question of hungry, with good BG and alert for me... rather than full stomach but sluggish and sleepy.
What do you mean when you say that exercising on two basal injections is hard? Should I be injecting more ( which I don't really want to do) and eating more Carbs?
As to consultant fees, as long as it is reasonable, that's fine, I'm not loaded but will sacrifice some of my savings to sort this out because I enjoy having energy and feeling as healthy as possible. I don't really know what the going rates are for this sort of consultation? My friend who does acupuncture charges £70 for the 1st session and £45-50 for the following. This seems quite reasonable...
