I have put this on as a new topic to give those of us who are Type 2, a chance to consult their own GP's regarding the New REPORT below:-
Healthcare Professionals Informed of Updated Interaction Advice for Simvastatin
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has written to healthcare professionals with updated advice about drug interactions between medications containing simvastatin (Zocor, Inegy) and other drugs that may be prescribed at the same time. Simvastatin can cause muscle weakness (myopathy) or muscle breakdown leading to kidney damage (rhabdomyolysis) and it was already known that at high doses and if certain other medicines are taken at the same time this risk is increased.
Medicines which increase this risk should not be taken at the same time as simvastatin. The latest MHRA advice adds three more medicines to this list: ciclosporin (Neoral, Sandimmun, Deximune), danazol (Danol) and gemfibrozil (Lopid). It also recommends that simvastatin should not be used at doses of more than 20mg daily when prescribed at the same time as amlodipine (Istin, Exforge) or diltiazem (Tildiem, Adizem, Angitil, Calcicard, Dilcardia, Dilzem, Slozem, Viazem, Zemtard) and no more than 10mg when prescribed at the same time as certain Fibrates (bezafibrate and ciprofibrate).

It is also important to note that grapefruit juice should be avoided by anyone taking simvastatin.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
The benefits of treatment with simvastatin continue to outweigh the risks for most patients. It is important to continue taking simvastatin as directed by your doctor. However, if you are prescribed any other medicines along with your simvastatin, it is a good idea to ask your doctor to review your treatment at your next routine appointment.
If you have any questions about this alert or your treatment with simvastatin you should discuss them with your doctor or other healthcare professional.
