I've seen a few research reports saying that certain types of fat, particularly the omega-3 type are healthy. Unfortunately, most of them seem to be unreachable at this moment.

It seems that the low-fat movement has pushed many people toward using mostly the omega-6 type of polyunsaturated fats. Although both the omega-3 and omega-6 types of polyunsaturated fats are essential to human health, this gives a bad ratio between these two types.

The sooner the "establishment" does some serious back tracking and admits they were almost COMPLETLY wrong with their information on Fats in the past, the better!

The benfits of omega 3s and the balance between omega 3 and 6 are well documented and accepted

Here is what the British Dietetic association says on
Omega 3 and Heart disease (2002)
http://www.bda.uk.com/resources/HeartDiseaseFats08.pdf
or food facts fats which describes the different fats and suggests a balance between them.
http://www.bda.uk.com/foodfacts/0405FatFacts.pdf

I've looked at the first 5 articles in the 2nd post (then gave up). Apart from the first one ( a very short trial with mice and chylomicrons which can be found in saturated fats,) The rest are concerned with the various types of oils (rice, grapeseed, olive, fish, flax) benefits of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, omega 3 and 6 fats . and the balance between Omega 3 and 6. None of the articles I read endorsed a high consumption of saturated fat and one warned of caution over the use of coconut oil in the absence of any real research.

As to the establishment backtracking, who and for what?
Governments? Scientists? or food manufacturers?
The history of cholesterol/lipid/cardiovascular/statins is not the same on this side of the Atlantic as that in the US.(we're always hearing about US experience, do we eat the same things, did the British government give the same advice?)
this is one British version of the history, from those who did the research (long and at times difficult for the non specialist)

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
I heard a programme on Radio 4 the other day, on Omega-3 fats. It said that omega-3s from plants are not nearly as good as the ones from fish and that we need MUCH more 3 than 6. can't remember the ratio :( perhaps need more omega 3?
I can attest to the fact that since I went low carb and started eating fats, my skin, which was dry and flaky all my life is now good. I'm also fairly low on wrinkles for a 60+ er.
I think the paleo diet has a lot going for it.
My slant on it is that I eat foods that are edible raw and unprocessed, even if I choose to cook some of them,e.g. meat.
On this measure, Breakfast cereals, which are VERY heavily processed, are OUT.
As are many pulses[the toxic beans] and nearly all grains.
I've had scrambled eggs followed by a crunchy salad for lunch.
Will have cauliflower and cheese for tea.
I like herbal teas, but I still drink coffee

Referring to the previous post,

"Toxic beans". :?: :?: Beans only become toxic if they are undercooked or eaten raw.
