New pump user

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 3.5 years ago now. At the time I was a fit and healthy 32 year old and so it was a bit of a surprise to say the least! That said, it is what it is and was simple enough to come to terms with, after all, it could be worse!

Anyway, after injecting since being diagnosed, I have now been approved for pump therapy, and have an education session this month before moving over to a pump on the 8th December. My specialist assures me that it's the best possible treatment and so I feel really fortunate to have been offered it.

My question really surrounds wearing the pump. By day, I wear suits for work, and I'm really interested to know how people wear them.

I don't really want to stick it in my pocket and have tubing on show, I'd like to keep everything hidden and as discreet as possible. Any ideas would be hugely appreciated.

You can get body bands so wear it around your chest. You could cut a small hole in your pocket and pass the tubing through it

I wear mine on a belt clip attached to my waist band and don't hide it or the tubes. Makes for an interesting conversation when people ask about it!

Mine just goes on now so I don't need to consider it. However I was on a tube pump I use the belt clip which is awesome. I found keeping it next to my skin didn't work as sometime came wet and at the waste I found it would pop off when sat down so it working with your body. I'm lucky as I am a seamstress so I took my clothes looked at the discrete at way but so I could also get to my pump and sewed zips pockets. Even just putting in your pocket helps. I found its looking at your body, the weight of the pump and scenarios needs I. E at the beach which can be a challenge of where to put your pump.
I have known people put it in socks, underwear and armpits so I guess it's each to their own

Thanks, I often wear a three piece so could have the pump in a waistcoat pocket, have a hole in the back and that'll be a nice and tidy option. I'm thinking a waistband would be the best way to carry most of the times though. I suppose a lot of it depends on how bulky the pump is though as imagine even under clothes you will notice it

Very true! To be honest, everyone in my life and all that work for me know I have diabetes and I'm not worried at all about people seeing me injecting. I as just seeing the pump as a way to tidy things up...at home I hate wires and cables, so kind of seeing it as the same thing! My ocd will take over, I just know it

I recently got the insight and tend to use the belt clip that came with it to pop it on my skirt waistband at work. I did also buy a body band from Hid In which is fantastic. It's so comfortable sometimes I question whether I put my pump back on after getting ready. And whilst the site is mainly focused on female products she does now offer a plain band specifically for guys. The one thing I would say about 'hiding' your pump away is it can be a nuisance if you have any alarms go off as I discovered when my set change reminder went off and I had to unearth my pump! It's not that much of a nuisance but something to bear in mind!

Another way that's really discreet for pumps with remotes is to put pump in a small pop sock and put pump in the top part of a pair of ankle socks with a good cuff and using a long 90 cm tube, feed the tube up the trouser leg to the set that's in the tummy, top part of leg or backside. All the functions for the pump can be accessed from the bg remote and the only time the pump will need to be accessed will be to do with occlusion or cartridge change. Most women will have some black pop sock tights that can be used

It's an interesting idea, but given the length of my legs, I might struggle a bit! I've a 35" inside leg

Get some tubigrip and that will do very nicely. Unfortunately, the skin clip that you are using with the Combo will break up over time so you may need to get a cheap camera case with a belt loop at back and a flap at top (Lowepro?) and use that to keep pump on waistband or just put pump in pocket

Hi Jonny sorry I'll explain. My pump now is omi pod it's tube free, so best way to describe is its like a plaster to put on and the machine attached to me is insulin the attach pump I have in my bag. If you go my life omi pod online your see what I mean

They do body belts which are lovely and comfy (I have a black and a white one). I use mine to sleep in or if I'm wearing trousers.
