Hi all, new to the forum, thought i'd join and take a look, i have recently had blood test and had the results saying 'your recent blood test show an elevated blood sugar in keeping with diabetes'

is this pre diabetes? do i have to have more tests? i am booked in with my GP next week, just wondering what happens next?

Not enough info to answer your questions, you'd need the blood glucose values ( and maybe other tests) to make a decision.

Yes, I agree. We can't answer that one with out the actual levels. I'm sure your GP surgery will tell you what they were if you ring and ask the receptionist. If it is suspected diabetes, then yes, you will have another test to confirm matters one way or the other.

thanks for the replies!

long story short, I have been having problems with my stomach, referred to a specialist for IBS, had some tests, one of which was a urine test, where the doctor said i have high amounts of sugar in my urine, he referred me for blood tests, which have come back as 'elevated sugar levels' that was all that was in the letter

i have an appointment with my GP next week.

I'm kind of worried it is diabetes, as my father is diabetic.

but until i see my GP next week, i guess I'm in limbo?

i thought i'd join the forum and see if there was anyone in a similar situation?

Well at least you have already found the forum so you can at least arm yourself with as much information as possible. Make sure to get a printout of your results then if you have any questions we can try and answer them for you.

hi all, got myself a test machine, booked in for some more tests at the diabetes clinic, i asked my GP if it would be a good to monitor my blood until then, he said it wouldn't do any harm!

started testing yesterday, my first reading was 14.2mmol/L (morning before food) 12.5mmol/L 1 hour after my dinner and 10.3mmol/L when i woke up this morning

It indicates an issue that's for sure. Numbers are too high for diabetics but we don't know the dropbacks in blood sugars (by way of explanation, you need to know your BS before your first bite and at 1 and 2 hours post meal) but let's not jump to conclusions just yet. Get that hba1c done first. Well done on getting the meter.

If indeed it comes back as "positive" then we will need to see your diet breakdown. There's heaps of people on here with invaluable advice, but again, let's sit on it and see

Worry not .... if you are in fact confirmed diabetic, then your numbers are a great starting point to cut them back to get you to non diabetic range fairly quickly with discipline on diet and exercise. That's the quick and dirty summary of it but it is easily done when you're out of the blocks before many.

I just stay away from pasta, rice, spuds, soft drinks, cakes, breads (well most) wheat, cereals, fruits (fructose and sugars which are bad for you be you diabetic or not) and consume heaps of above ground greens with fish, fats, meat, chicken, lamb just there for the taking. If you need to lose weight, then start now. Up the water intake too.

My pleasure mate :) Glad I could help, albeit a little bit ..... sounds like the focus might be on either weight loss but above all, exercise. Leave the rest to your better 2nd half but as long as you dump the "bad stuff', you'll be well on your way. I've seen some amazing stories here where people record levels I rarely achieve (I'm talking 3s to really low 4s) even though I'm "non-diabetic" and they were way above me when they started out. It can be done. Mind over matter for a lot of it, the rest involves a degree of luck that you aren't cursed with other conditions so I wish you well.

Call us back and we'll greet you with a "what can I do for you today?"

Yes I think a lot of people here have found Slimming World good so your wife will know the best things for you to eat. I think we all have a ...bad stuff... moment sometimes
