I was diagnosed type 2 in 1999 whilst in the armed services, as a result of the diabetes and quite a few other skeletal problems I was retired as medically unfit for further service. For me the most annoying part was there is no diabetes in my family, I have never been overweight and certainly not sedentary, quite the opposite in fact, I was a body builder for a period and also indulged in many other physically demanding pastimes.. Before being diagnosed I came down with chicken pox (second time) and Influenza A six months after. that. The endocrinologist suspected I was a slowly evolving type 1 brought on by the chicken pox and Influenza so close together. On tablets for about 6 months I progressed to insulin very quickly as the oral medication didn’t have the required effect. Had trouble for a while until I stumbled on carb counting and have had very good control ever since. . Doc looks through my book and asks questions regularly and makes suggestions but otherwise leaves me too it, He also suggested there was no need for me to see the specialist and writes me up as a very well controlled type 2. No argument from me re specialist, I have never received an answer to my questions from one, all seem totally disinterested and are simply locked onto collecting data and nothing else. One specialist made the statement : ‘it’s easy to control diabetes, just eat the same foods, do the same amount of activity and take the right amount of insulin - simple’. I never went back! H1ABC is usually around 6.8 which my GP says is too low, but I’m happy there and can’t remember my last hypo. I don’t follow a particular diet just eat healthy food (although I am rather partial to a biscuit or four) and exercise regularly. I have just been diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica and am now on steroidal meds, blood sugars went through the roof so now I’m injecting 3 times as much Novo Rapid and Protophane. I’m finding it almost impossible to exercise with the PMR affecting my arms, elbows, shoulder and neck and that also makes keeping my BSLs in the right range very difficult. I also have moderate OA of both hips, lumbar, and thoracic spine, both elbows, right shoulder and severe OA of cervical spine which also cuts down on activity levels. That’s my whinge for today - sometimes it even makes me feel better!
