Newish Diagnosed - Where do i go from here?

Hi Guys (and Gals)

I was recently diagnosed typed 2 at the end of July 09. (HbA1c was 11.2% - finger prick test at 13.8mmol)

At the time, it was very much all doom and gloom, especially as am only 25 years old, it only got worse too and apparently according to one nurse "it was inevitable i would become type 1 soon"

Due to my father, and two sets of granparents having type 2 diabetes, i think i was always destined to get it....Anyway, at that point in time, i was weighing around 16st4, and now am down to 14st7. (I am 6ft 2")

My latest HbA1c result was at 6.5%, down from the inital 11.2% in July and 8.2% in september.

I'm over the moon with this, i've watched my diet closley, cut down major on potatoes, rice and pasta, and play 5-a-side football at least once a week now.

My question now is however, where do i go from here? When my HbA1c in september came back at 8.2% my doctor wanted to put me on more metformin, (i'm currently on 2 a day at the moment) but a diabetic consultant i saw a few weeks before told me not to take any more tablets until my december HbA1c result, and he appears to have been spot on .

Hi petchy!

Great news all that - you certainly are quite clearly on the right road! Keep it up!

It sounds as though you seem well on track to avoid going down the medication route.

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hi petchy.
Welcome to the forum. Well done with all those good results.

In answer to your question - listen to your Consultant, they are far better qualified and more knowledgeable than any GP. His advice was obviously the best for you. Whilst you are on 2 Met a day, it is far better if you can achieve good control and avoid going down the increased meds route unless it is needed to improve control.
