Hi everyone
i have just joined this forum as I am completely bewildered and would be really gratefull for your advice
I am a 46yr old over weight female and have been feeling unwell for sometime, really bad headaches, dizziness, thirst, terrible pains in my hands and feet, frequent trips to the loo and just generally feeling awful, went to gp and eventually told it could be high blood pressure, turned out i do have high bp and was prescribed ramipril 2.5mg which I have been taking for 3 weeks , gp then said I needed to have a fasting blood test, had this and was told I may have diabetes, went for a gtt at the hospital on 17th Feb, then saw gp on 19th to get the results, he just said yes you are a diabetic type 2, he didnt tell me what the levels were and I didnt realise I should ask, I told him I knew nothing about diabetes and what should I do, what happens next etc, he just said oh you will be sent an appointment for the diabetes clinic and that was it. Well that was 2 weeks ago and I have not heard a thing and obviously as its not being treated in any way i still feel rotten, I have no idea what I should and shouldnt be eating, I am completely ignorant about this condition and the care you should receive but surely something should have been done by now or is this not unusual
do you normally have to wait for treatment? I would really appriciate any advice or just if anyone else has had this kind of treatment.
Thank you in advance Deb

Hi Debs, welcome to the forum. You're in safe hands here! :)
I am a type 2 also, diagnosed in Jan & waiting for different appts, so I know what you're going through!
Have a look at the Low Carb threads, especially the success stories - there's loads of info about great diet tips there.
Hopefully there'll be an expert along soon to help you,
in the meantime, keep posting, reading the threads and asking questions - and don't worry :( - not easy though!
Regards

Shame on your doctor for not giving you any info for 2 weeks, that's far too long for you to go without being proactive.

As long as you are feeling bad, you should be drinking plenty of water, which it sounds like you are doing.

Try to restrict your carbohydrate intake to 60 g per meal (you can look on the back of food labels to determine how much it is) and definitely eat less bread, noodles, and sweets, and more vegetables and possibly meat.

and if the pain in your feet isn't keeping you from exercising, getting out and walking will probably bring your sugar down a little and help you feel better. My doctor says 30 minutes of walking (or swimming, biking, whatever) per day is ideal.

And if you think you will pass out or are having excessive pain or digestive problems, you might want to go to the emergency room. If your levels are so high they're causing this many problems in your body, there could be other effects on your organs and your general health that you don't know about yet. If you live alone, i'd have the ER on speed dial, and if you live with family, make sure they know you're sick and if anything bad happens, they should call a doctor right away.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll be fine until you meet the diabetes educator, but just in case, these are things you should do.

Hi Deb

What a great GP you have !!

At a guess I would say your sugar levels are too high - read through the forum on low carb diets.
If you can cut out the high sugar / starch foodstuffs you should start feeling better fairly quickly.

Get back in touch with your Doctor and get him to prescribe you a blood test meter so you can monitor your own BG levels.

There is loads of useful information on this site and better still lots of friendly people who can offer you advice :)

Thank you all so much, I feel a bit better having read your replies and I will take all your advice. This is such a great forum, I am so glad I found it
Thanks again Deb :)

Hi, my story is very similar to yours. I was put on a waiting list to see a specialist and sent home. It was very scary. I have just seen the specialist and it was ok but I had already dealt with it on my own. This forum has helped me greatly. Good luck with it and hope it gets sorted soon. If your specialist is like mine you will come out feeling very educated and very happy that you can control this :)

That would have me flat on my back, I do about 60g per DAY, up to around 100g on a busy day.

Here's a good way to find your own limits

#1 treatment for what sounds like peripheral neuropathy is to get and keep your BG down, this may also help

but takes time
