Hi all, have just found this site and thought id have a rant to people who no wat im going through. Right here goes..... My son is only 10 months old and was diagnosed type 1 diabetes about a month ago i was so scared really thought i was going to lose him. He went unconcious because no doctor would listen to me when i was saying i no my child there is something wrong and all they would say is it was thrush what a joke! I gave them all the classic symptoms ie weeing alot, drinking alot and being tired all the time but because he is so young of course it coundnt be that! He has not had mmr jab, is still breast fed, had a normal delivery and no1 in mine or dads family has any form of diabetes so who or what am i suppose to blame???? In saying all this we are all coping ok with it apart from the food part of it all we really dont no what to give him! Any suggestions appreciated because it is really hard to find anything to help because he is so young so food youd give a 10 year old is no good really for a 10 month old. Anyway thanks for listening to me rant on kelly xxx

Hi,

I can't offer any advice I'm sorry but wanted to wish you all the best....it will be a real challenge for you no doubt but I'm sure you'll both be fine!

I really do feel for you though and I really wish you well. I have tried Googling for some info and all I can get is diabetes in pregnancy as opposed to having a baby with diabetes..

I would defo keep banging on the door of your healthcare specialists as you absolutely need peace of mind as quickly as possible.

Good luck for the future.

I had a quick gander on Google. Try 'neonatal diabetes'. Quite a few relevant hits came up.

Hi Kelly, best advice (as others have already said) is to keep on at your local GP/hospital for help and support - as you already know, it's a tricky business but your son isn't the only baby to have been diagnosed so it is up to your local medical experts to help you out! I wish I could put you in touch with my DN 'team' as I know they would walk you through every step which is what you need at this stage....

All the best, let me/us know how you get on :)

Hi Kelly,
Well, I am a T1 diabetic myself, and have a baby, so I at least can empathise iwth your situation. Most "baby" food are usually quite high carb. I have no experience of this, but I guess, if you have got an insulin/milk routine that works, go from there. It is so difficult to work out exactly how much breast fed babies actually "eat", but meals based on milk should be easier to calculate as they are similar in carn content to his milk diet. there are also some "free" foods, ie fodds that are carb free, that would be a good thing to give him...carott sticks, celery sticks, all that lovely finger food. My little one likes cucumebr, which is carb free too. I am not suggesting at all that you limit his carbohydrates at such a young age, but for those "screaming hungry" moments, when you don't want to do anything insulin wise, it is always worth knowing.

I would push to see a specialist dietician. Like all things diabetic, it is a bit of trial and error, testing to see what effect things have on him etc.

My heart really does go out to you. 10 month olds can be fussy eaters at the best of times. Well done for sticking to your guns about his health.

You should really work as close as possible with your diabetic team, as dealing with very young diabetics is different to that of an adult, they do run in similar lines, but the approach to Blood glucose control will differ as this is due to it being as you are probably already aware that maintaining blood glucose as a set range is very very difficult...

Your team will be abe to advice you on blood glucose levels ranges to aim for, that should provide a safety net alonside providing protection against long term problems... These ranges are likely to change as your son grows...

As to food, learning and knowing carb content is a very good idea, as to what types of foods he should eat, a normal healthy balanced diet.. Swapping things such as normal jellies to sugar free jellies... Restricting but not totally avoiding such things as ice-cream etc...

As already said, for snacks or fillers, cucumber, carrots, celery, chunks of cheese, slices of meat all help...

Another trick with children, if they become a eater that may not want all there meal, is to inject there insulin after they've eaten so you can adjust accordlly

It might be wise at this stage, to take a look at insulin pumps, and discuss this with the diabetic team, as this is a more flexible method of controlling diabetes in children also having the advantage of avoiding dailly regular injections...

As who's to blame, well no-one except mother nature! I'm the same i come from a very large family indeed but I am the only diabetic of any type!!

It goes without saying, that you and your son have a hard road to travel, but you will do it you will get through the difficult times, there is no reason that your child shouldn't thrive and grown as any other child, the treatments, regimes and understanding are constantly improving all the time...

Hi so sorry to hear about your son it must have been frightening, have you thought about meals with pastas and potatoes as they will give him the carbs, it must be really hard for you and it it will probably take you some time to get your head around. I would think that preparing your own meal for him would be a lot better then the baby food jars because at least you know what is going into it. Best of luck
