So happy to see some information on Lada diabetes.
I am british but live in Italy and have just been diagnosed with Lada .After six days in hospital was put on insulin right away and I was finding it hard to understand what this type of diabetes was all about on the Italian sites.
Thank goodness I have found your site and Good luck to everyone!

Hey audsital!

Sorry about your diagnosis, but there are many of us with this condition and we mostly cope pretty well. You'll soon adjust to the insulin. Ask anything you need and there's usually someone around to help.

I've had LADA for nearly 4 years and take Levemir basal and Apidra bolus.

Take care

Hi, like you I'm not in the UK. I live in France and have been diagnosed with LADA for the last 8 years (well as my doc said T1 or maybe 1.5) and have used insulin for that time. (probably had the condition for 3 years before that ). Thankfully the awful fears I had during my 10 day stay in hospital haven't been fulfilled.I still consider my self fit and healthy .

When I first started trying to find out about it the references were few and far between. Most people seemed to suggest it was very rare and some doctors denied it's existence. I think that they are learning more but they learn the more questions are raised.
I often give this reference to people so you might have seen it

Here's another one that I found recently which gives a good intro.

One problem with LADA is definition as both the article above and this one also suggests.

I tried to find a bit more about the doctor describing it as fast developing T2 rather than slow developing T1. ((he published a study in 2010 on genetics of T1, LADA and T2 but with no real conclusions, I can't find anything more recent )

LADA certainly isn't that rare. One recent study looked at over 6000 consecutive diagnoses in clinics in 9 European countries and nearly 10% were found to have autoimmune antibodies.

Thanks for the support and messages of encouragement.
Just wondered, I am generally a really positive person but over the last week have been feeling really down, anxious and even panicky. Is this normal? is it part and parcel of diabetes? .

Thanks

Hi Audsital,

LADA and the changes it entails can be a lot to take in and many people feel a bit down and daunted by it all at first, especially if trying to deal with insulin, hypos, carb counting etc. it can all be quite frightening. That panicky feeling of being out of control does pass in time when you get used to things. However, it's always worth mentioning things like that to your diabetes team as diabetes is sometimes linked to depression. Also, there are some people who believe a particular insulin causes them these feelings, so if the feelings don't pass, make sure you tell your diabetes team.
