Hi, I’m 59 years old and have been informed that I am prediabetic which has come as a surprise. I am a ‘good’ weight with a healthy BMI of 21.9. I eat a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and veg, fish and occasional meat. However, I do eat far too much fruit so cutting that down, and I do have the sweetest tooth so will have to cut that down too. I power walk twice a day with my dog and keep busy. I am not sure why this has happened but I do wonder if having several courses of steroids over the last 20 years may not have helped? I’ve read a lot about the condition since being diagnosed and am pleased I have found this community. I’m trying to reduce my ‘white’ carbohydrate intake down. Should I purchase a blood glucose monitor? Is that a must? Thank you in advance.

I bought a blood glucose meter when diagnosed pre diabetic, like you I was slim, also I was very active.
Test before and 2 hours after your first mouthful, eliminate foods that give a rise of more than 2 from your starting reading. You can test the same foods at different times of day.
Doing this you will learn what food to avoid, I found that the brown carbs and pulses the gp recommended increased my blood glucose as much as the processed white carbs.
By following this regime, getting my bmi below 20, leaving a 12 hour window between my evening meal and breakfast I've maintained absolutely normal hba1c's for many years.

Hi. I’m type 2 for over 20 years. Became fatter and needed more meds by following nhs food guidelines. I now know my body cannot tolerate carbs white or brown. I’m dealing with it now but so wish I’d had access to good info all those years ago. This website has loads of helpful info.
Please do self test and find out which carbs, not just sugars, affect you and if you can, get a free trial of a CGM. I found that invaluable in giving me info about what spiked my glucose. Lentils and porridge was a huge surprise. For me, I can tolerate a little carbs in my evening meal but not at other times in the day. I try to stay around 50-75 carbs per day. Others manage around 130 but some restrict their carb intake to under 20.
Finding out there were 10-12 carbs in a single plain biscuit was an eye opener.
Best wishes on your journey.

To me it was invaluable. I learned so much about what foods suit my body and which don't.
Once you know, you don't have to keep testing.
Hi there. That is so interesting and really gives me some encouragement. Thank you so much for sharing that, and well done for getting there in the end.

Hi there.
Thank you very much and thank you for sharing your history. It sounds like it’s a real juggle to find out what one can tolerate, or not, and it must have quite tough when you were diagnosed 20 years ago. I really can’t imagine only having 20 carbs a day.
You take care.
