Hi everyone, I've was diagnosed with Type 2 back in May (BT 7.9) and after my 3-month follow-up blood test (7.5) my doctor seemed pleased and put me on Metformin 500 mg, one tablet twice a day. I asked if I could continue by diet alone but he told me that at my age I needed Metformin - and over time might eventually need insulin.
Unfortuantely the more I read about T2 diabetics the more confused I became. I listened carefully to what the DSN and diabetic doctor (at my local hospital) told me. regarding diet. After reading conflicting dieting views, I decided on a kind of 50/50 diet approach. I reduced my carbs but took their advice on fruit, veg, bread, cereals and small portions of potato etc. I also ate a lot of meats, fish, cheese, and eggs.
Since discovering this site, I decided to go against my MD's advice and have just begun to monitor my blood sugar levels. On Saturday I took my first reading 2 hours after having had Wheatabix and milk for breakfast and was horrified to get a reading of 9.7. So decided to drastically reduce carbs and Sunday's fasting was 6.3 and Yesterday's was 6.5. I had a breakfast of s/eggs and bacon with black coffee and 2 hours later tested at 6.3!! After dinner yesterday of eggs, backon, cold meats and cheese my reading was 5.2. This morning my fasting was 5.9 and after a breakfast of prorridge it was 6.5.
Sorry to woffle on but had I not dicovered this site I would still be at very high BS levels and at 72 years of age, probably helping on diabetic complications.
