Don't be disheartened Roxy, it's quite common to lose weight in this manner and I am sure next week you'll be in for a big surprise!

Nigel

thanx Nigel i really hope so, i am relying on diet and weight loss for my next HBAc1, so i can avoid meds

xx

Hi Roxy
your doing really well, imagin if you was to keep losing the weight every week like you did in your first week it wouldnt be good for you and youd put it all back on again, a steady 2lbs a week is what a lot of doctors advise and that way its more likely to stay off,, good luck hun,

Sue

One reason why people lose weight in the first week is because dieting can help by reducing water retention
http://www.weightlossforall.com/frustrated.htm#b

Also dieting can reduce your natural stores of glycogen. The body stores up to 1kg (2.2lbs) of glycogen.

So the initial weight loss may have been partly helped by a losing water and glycogen weight. It's possible the body may try to recover and put weight back on in week 2 or 3. Don't be disheartened by this. Keep doing what you're doing and (whilst I'm no expert) I'd probably recommend reviewing things after 6 weeks. people may have better advice for this though.

thanx Sue and Alaska

the main thing is my diet and the 2nd or maybe equaley improtant is weight loss,

i really dont think i could eat any better than i am,

examples
breakfast 2 weetabix made with half water and milk and sweetner, only cereal so far not to put my BS up.

lunch...lost of green salad with chicken, although today was veg soup with 1 slice of seeded bread

snack maybe some fruit.

evening dinner, lots of vegs with meat, maybe a few new potatoes, last night was spag boll made with very lean mince and a small amount of brown pasta.

before bed..sugar free jelly and fruit, and sometimes 2-3 peices of dark choc

i have just this week started excercising...only 15 mins for now on a trampet or treadmill

thanx for taking the time to read this xx

Hi Roxy,

As your blood sugars come down so will your weight. Your metabolism will work better. It is early days yet and you are doing great. Give yourself a pat on the back.

Myself, I'd consider cutting down on the carbs at evening meal and introduce a touch more fat -your diet looks to be pretty low fat here so I wouldn't worry too much about upping the fat content a bit

Have extra virgin olive oil and vinegar on your salad. (avoid ready made dressings)

I would also swap the seeded bread for crispbread (like ryvita) that has the highest fibre content per 100g

I would try to avoid having canned soup as these will contain additives and I don't think these are beneficial for health over the long term.

Depending on how you go, I would probably look to miss out the pre-bed snack.

Stick to the exercise too -even when you feel like doing nothing -try to stick in 5 mins or so each day (and you'll probably end up doing 10 mins )

great advice as always catherine and alaska,

gonna go and tread the mill now lol thank you xxx

Most sources put the max amount of glycogen stored at any one time at around 500g. 70g to 100g in the liver and 200g to 400g in the muscles but after 4 weeks of a reduced carb diet I would expect a fair bit less than that to be present at any time although it is not stored evenly but affected by the carbs you eat, but you are probably right about the water loss in the early stages of a low carb diet as glycogen causes the body to hold onto around three times the weight of glycogen in water so as the glycogen stores are depleted so the water is shed along with it.

Your doing well Roxy, dont stress it, it will come off, as I started to reduce my carb intake and reduce portion sizes which I did quite drastically for the first six to eight months my weight loss was between 1lb and 4lb a week but on average about 2lb a week as I remember. Aim for the next half a stone marker, then when you reach it aim for the next half a stone and watch the weight come off, if you set your targets to far apart or are looking to get to your lowest target weight from the start it just never seems to come, but do it in stages and it seems much quicker, well it did for me, in a couple of months you will need a new wardrobe so start saving now

thanx Sid,

what is glycogen? i will have to google it and read up,

does my daily eating example look ok?, i cant do with counting calories etc, tried the slimming world and its not for me, so i will keep to eating as healthy as i can,

just had chicken with stir fry veggies cooked with a little frylight, thought it was going to be dry but actually it was rather nice...added a little low salt soy sauce for flavour

i did 15 mins on the trampet again...didnt bother with the treadmill today xxx

Dear Roxy,

The only one who can decide about your diet is you plus your meter. If that is giving good results then your eating plan is working. We can all give you suggestions but this eating plan is for the rest of your life so you need foods that you enjoy.

Try not to stress about it, you are doing great, stress will raise your levels.

thanx catherine

this is the 1st day i have felt quiet well and feel positive about things, and its all down to the help i get here from you all xxxxxx

Good for you Roxy...

I too am losing weight and noticed a slowing down of the rate so it's not unknown. I had googled "plateau syndrome" and although I don't think my body is anywhere near that stage yet it meant I was prepared to just carry on being sensible and exercising hard. I have continued to lose 1-2lb a week and when I weigh myself tomorrow if I lose 1.2lb it'll be my 1st stone gone! SO don't panic it'll come off and as someone said small targets keep you motivated and landmarks like I'll reach tomorrow (positive thinking-no other way) are all rewards for the effort. I've had friends notice my weight loss so keep going it feels good when others notice!

well done Gappy, how long to lose the stone?

i wont give up...but 1lb or 2 in a week would have been nice....but never mind i'll carry on and see what happens xxx

I weighed myself today and needed to lose 1.2lb for my 1st stone, I did it I lost 1.7lb! It's taken 8 weeks to get this far so I average 2lb a week and a bad week! But to be honest it's not how much you lose or how quickly, as far as I'm concerned it's how long you keep it off. I made a lot of changes (bread was a weakness of mine) but I don't feel I've suffered or "gone without". Anything that's not a gain is positive progress.

Hi Roxy

I can't remember if you've said how old you are, but if you're still having periods that will certainly affect your weight loss. Pre-diabetes, I used to put on a little weight at both ovulation and before my period. Even now, post-menopause, I still have a hormone cycle that affects my weight - it's just not so easy to tell where I am in it!

Another thing that can slow weight loss is any sort of NSAIDs - eg Ibuprofen, diclofenac etc. It's very frustrating not to see results, but you're eating for your diabetes now, so don't stress about your weight loss. It will go if you eat right and exercise a bit.

If you're anything like me, getting depressed 'cos the pounds aren't going leads to a 'Sodom, for Goomorrah we die!' mood, and I reach for all the wrong things. Don't let it happen!

Anyone recognise the quote? You'll need to be over 60!

Body starts reacting initally to the change in diet and loses weight.....

Body gets used to diet and plateau's.......

Body has another kick up the bum and starts to lose again....

You'll do it......just don't give up and persevere,......you will repa the benifts longterm......just get yourself out of the thinking of the short term.........our bodies aren't built over 10. 20. 30 years......think logically.......your body is having a lot of changes......it has got used to one way of living for a long term.....it is just getting used to a new way.........just keep checking your bloods and the carbs etc.....and you will do it...and keep logging in for support........
