Hey everyone, so I'm freaking out a little thinking I might have diabetes. Before you tell me to go to the doctor, I already have a blood sugar and a1c test scheduled for tomorrow morning.
Now I normally live in the states but am in another country for the semester (Hong Kong). The only symptoms I have noticed are that sometimes I don't feel well after eating lots of sugar, like a large bag of particularly sugary candy in one sitting, but apparently I've been told that that is normal. I can eat big carbs like pasta, rice, etc without any problems at all
Also, one thing I'm not sure about is my vision. I have pretty awful vision to begin with (-5.75 and -5.25). I went to a small eyeglass shop in Hong Kong to get my eyes examined and they gave me a new pair of glasses. According to them, my vision changed to like -6.5 and -7 or 8: they didn't give me a form with my prescription. Furthermore, the new glasses they gave me are almost the same as my old ones! There's hardly a difference from the old ones. For such an enormous jump in vision, I would definitel ynotice a difference. Also, I have been through the phase before where I really badly needed new glasses, and it was definitely really obvious, like not being able to see properly for starters -_- i'm a full-time college student and my vision seems to be fine with me: i can see the lecture boards, read signs clearly, etc. So I'm thinking this may be a screw on part of the eyeglass shop?
Lastly is the big one: I'm very very skinny to begin with (all my life) and weigh in normally around 102 lb (46.3 kg). I don't really weigh myself frequently though because it's not a problem. I weighed myself using a home scale a little over one month ago and that was my weight. I weighed myself today and clocked in at 93.6 lb (42.4 kg). I was really alarmed: however some factors:
1. Stress in a new country (if I'm stressed, I tend to eat less)
2. Back at home I snack all the time and literally sit in front of the TV or computer in pretty much all of my free time
3. Here, I'm constantly moving. The walk to class is pretty far, I go out to explore the new city on weekdays, and I'm moving a lot of weekends. I've even done a few intense hikes while I've been here (whereas I don't even run or cycle back at home)
4. Here, I only really eat at designated meal times as it's difficult to snack (and I'm busy)
Can all of these factors really lead to an 8 lb / 4 kg loss though? The 42.4 kg was just after a very light breakfast (read: a muffin). I weighed myself again after a decent lunch and was only around 42.7 kg. And that was without going to the bathroom at all. The scale was kind of screwy though and kept fluctuating even though I was standing still and balanced. It was the scale at my campus's fitness center, but didn't seem to be that high tech
So I'm a hypochondriac and went out and got one of the inexpensive testing kits. My readings seem to be normal: 4.6 after fasting for a very long time (been told that could have caused liver to spill gluocose into my blood, artifically raising it). Around 5.8 two hours after a big dinner one night. Then around 5.5 another night 2.5 hours after a big bowl of rice and a pack of mentos (candy) after. So things seem pretty normal on that front. I washed my hands with water before hand and tried to make sure everything I used was clean
Yeah, you can definitely tell I'm paranoid now...the one concerning thing to me is the weight loss. But I have never immersed myself in a foreign country longer than a week, so maybe the month I've spent so far in HK is doing it?
Forgot to add: I don't have unusual thirst. No insane urges to urinate nor is my hunger out of control.
