He was never going to achieve it anyway, and he's just slipping this in now while there's someone else to blame. It was a silly thing to aim for anyway, government debt is a great thing, but it sounded good to the simpletons who voted for him.

Debt is not a great thing, especially when £1 in every 4 that your government is spending is servicing national debt.

High Government Debt was a perfectly good idea when you could rely on the Debt being inflated away over the years.

The Inflation beast was slain in the 1990's and will not be coming back.

The 2007/8 crisis has made Deflation the big worry.

Debt and Deflation are not good bedfellows.

Scary combo. Impressed with the new cabinet, no emergency budget, 2.5% bump in sterling today, abandonment of structural deficit target... Might just help:)
