Hi everyone
Can you please tell me wether my readings are ok as had no advice from nurse so I havent got a clue. Reading first thing before food is 7.5 for last two mornings. For two evenings runing reading after 2 hours after eating 4 crispbread with very small bit of cheese was 10.7 but last night eating excatly the same was 11.2 . Today I tested lunch time before eating cauliflower cheese it was 7.5 2hours after it was 5.6 . I usually only eat fish and salad but wanted a change. I do not know if this is right or not. Advice would be gratefully recieved. i have only just started testing.

Thank you for your reply. I am not on meds, just told see you in 4 months time after you have had a blood test. I was told when I had the diabetic eye test to get a meter so I know what sugars are, I am also trying to loose weight so thought crispbread would be better than bread so could it be the 4 crispbread doing it ?.That is all i had for tea. Brakfast is 2 weetabix and dinner is usually fish and salad. Do not what else to change.

Well, the only thing that's going to push your readings higher is the amount of carbs. Now that you're testing, you can start to work out how many carbs affect you and which particular foods you're likely to have a problem with.

The morning reading at 7.5 is not disastrous - it would be good to know if you're going to bed with a level that's higher than that. I find if I've got a high reading at 10pm, it'll give me a higher reading at 6am.

For the crispbread, it'll come in a packet which shows the total carbs per 100g and possibly the total carbs per crispbread. Ignore the 'of which sugars' bit - it's the total carbs you're counting. Cheese has no carbs to count, so if you're only having crispbread and cheese then it should be easy to count the carbs. With a pre-meal reading and one 2 hrs later you now have an idea of what crispbread does to your levels.

I suspect that 2 weetabix is quite high - that's about 26g of carb. Could you have 1 weetabix and perhaps a bit of greek yoghurt or egg or an omelette? It's all a bit of a game in the first few weeks of testing, finding out what your body will accept. I can eat porridge, for example, without it hurting my levels even though there's 29g of carb in it. That's because it's slow acting - and I mean real porridge not the packet stuff.

So keep at it - if it comes in a packet then you know the carbs. I use the Collin Gem Carb Counting book which is excellent for calculating everything else. You'll soon build up a 'safe' list of meals and snacks to work from.

Hey Louloulee!

Welcome! The forum can be a bit quiet over the weekend, but normally you'll get lots of help here :D I'm not a Type 2, but just wanted to say 'Hi' as i felt sorry for you - it's b****y awful when the doctors leave you in a situation where you know there's something wrong with you but give you no advice. Lots of us on here have had shocking care from our doctors and nurses.

OK, your levels. It's a bit of trial and error, but basically you need to test before and 2 hours after every meal to start with. As a Type 2 you are aiming for post meal levels below 8, but it will probably take a bit of time to get there. Try to reduce (or cut out) starch carbs such as bread, rice, pasta, potato and cereal. Many Type 2s can eat small amount of them or eat e.g. granary bread instead of white, but on the whole, most diabetics get better blood glucose (BG) readings by drastically reducing our carb intake. Have a good look around the forum (there is a great low-carb section with amazing recipes - if you feel that low-carbing is for you). In the meantime, the link below gives you some information that one of the moderators, Daisy' usually gives to new members. Ask any questions you want - people are very helpful on here. Take your time and don't panic - things get easier, I promise :D

Hi Louloulee and welcome to the forum :) I think you are getting some useful answers to your questions. Have a good look at the link that Smidge posted as there is some very helpful information in there. Ask as many more questions as you need to and someone will always help.

Thank you all for your replys. I have cut out what I think is right, thought crispbread would be ok but obviously not, will keep trying. Thank you again.
