Potatoes : cause a huge spike for me which will last for hours , and mess up my BG for a day or two.

Hi ,

I have a GCM . So I know the effect of different foods on my BG. With potatoes , it’s way the worst . It causes a huge spike and it stays high for 4-5 hours and even one day later it won’t be back to baseline . No other food has this effect on me .

Any similar experience? Why ?

Starch sugar, 100g of regular potatoes is around 40g of carbohydrate. When you look at a serving of 100g it isn't a lot. And yeah, it certainly is something I'd stay away from from.

Off the wall thought.
Perhaps its due to inflammation or genetic or epigenetic reaction. Do you also react badly to tomatoes and other foods of South American origin?

Many people report that following testing and monitoring that they have a food which is, for them, a bit like rocket fuel. Curiously, it quite often something they really like too.

I know of at least one person who can actually eat sugary foods more successfully, in terms of blood glucose results, than bread or other foods containing grains. This is why one size of living doesn't suit all, and exactly why we have to find our own way to progress.

The good news is you now know, and you can decide how you will deal with it.

Potatoes are very high in glucose. They’re in the upper echelons of the glycemic index. Up there with bread. More glucose than table sugar.

Thanks everyone. It all makes sense .
I can handle ice cream and sweets better than potatoes and bread .

I used to be allergic to tomatoes but not anymore . I have lots and lots of food allergies .

I am not going to get near potatoes ever again . I love them sadly though . But I love myself more

My worry is not only the spike , but also it is the fact that after the spike , it won’t return to baseline after hours an hours and it messes up my bg for days . It’s like it won’t get out of my blood stream .

Very large potatoes can have even more than shown here. So much sugar to deal with.

Really useful info graphic.

But, <haha> on the NICE guideline at the bottom, my doctor doesn't even want to discuss my health let alone changes to my diet. Blame the patient again when we don't bother.

CARBS AND CALS FLASH CARDS
Some have sugar equivalents as signs

Carbs & Cals Flashcards PACK 1: 64 double-sided flashcards to improve your carb & calorie counting skills https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1908261277/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_mUTjEbRXD886E

If you have an Alexa just ask her how many carbs in ........

Or Google.

4g carbs converts to around 1 teaspoon of sugar.

I have cut potatoe out of my diet. No chips, no jacket potato. If we have a stew with pieces of potato in that my wife makes I avoid them.

Spudlites are back in stock at the store we do or grocery shopping at, after the bush fires causing transport and supply problems.

So will be back into eating them again...
