advice from any pregnant/previously pregnant ladies please...

i make myself 7 weeks pregnant, this was a surprise pregnancy (with reasonably well controlled BS levels thank goodness) so i wasn't 'in the system' of the pre-conception clinics that they hold in ante-natal clinics...my doc got me in for an early scan but they didn't see much so i'm booked in for another one next monday. had a booking in appt with midwife yest but she told me until i get the scan next week i can't go ahead and get to the ante-natal clinic where they have diabetes specialists/midwives etc.

so next mon i'll be 8 weeks, hoping everything's ok they'll then get the ball rolling. but by then i won't get to a clinic much before 9 weeks? i'm thinking this is a bit late in the day to be attending a diabetes/ante-natal appointment? my previous 2 pregnancies were very much planned and as i was attending the pre-conception clinic it was all taken care of - can't remember first ante-natal appt but i'm sure it was before 8-9 weeks??? blood sugar levels are going a bit haywire, very worrying in this early stage of fetal development. i've had to just monitor by myself - and have seen a significant (about 35%) increase in insulin requirements already. just testing hourly and adjusting/eating (or drinking lucozade!) where necessary. it's a full time job! hypo awareness already decreased from surfing low BS, was 2.4 on waking today and felt 'normal'.

any thoughts? who should i bug for more input? doc & midwife so far are happy for me to 'self monitor' - so am i to a certain extent, but as i'm not part of a diabetes clinic (1st appt in 2 years is 4/4, will prob still go) don't have a team to contact or anything. i'm thinking that's not quite right???

Call the hospital you are booked at and ask to be put through to whoever makes appointments for ante-natal clinic. You may have some luck but chances are, it will be weeks before you can get in. Failing that, can you see your endocrinologist?

thanks wiflib...will give em a ring. ha, haven't got an endoc... yet, not in a system. just concerned that early preg is when the organs are developing and any high sugars will have a detrimental effect? doing the best i can, hope this is enough to avoid probs.

It sounds like you have a real understanding of how you control your levels and you could tell them a thing or two! The thing is about babies is their amazing resilience. That little nugget obviously decided to make a surprise appearance for a reason.
