I became a type 1 diabetic 28 years ago when I was pregnant with my second child. My daughter is now 13 weeks pregnant. She often uses my test machine and recently I believe her blood test reuslts have been higher than they should be. Her midwife has said she will have a glucose tolerance test at 28 (?) weeks. Her test was 8 at 6 p.m. today, she's eaten 2 slices of white toast for breakfast and a cheese sandwich on brown at lunchtime. Do you think I should tell her to insist that a GTT is done straight away rather than wait?
Sorry I'm new to this site and have never used forums :?

Well, if she's worried about it, then yes she should ask for a glucose tolerance test, as worrying about things can't be good when you are pregnant.

I've no idea how pregnancy affects blood sugar levels so I don't know if 8 is a good reading or not, sorry.

I agree ompletely. A reading of 8 after 2 slices of bread is not an alarming figure....but if she is worried and there is a family history it is worth insisting. There is aenough to worry about when you are pregnant...without this as well. gestational diabetes is quite common I believe, and does tend to surface at around 28 weeks, as the body changes...but, I would certainly insist on a GTT now...and also, if you can, get some of teh urine dip sticks..so that you daughter can moniter herself
