Hi there, to try and cut a very long story short,I was diagnosed last October with Type 2 after 2 high fasting bs.I originally went as my Type 1 sister in law had tested me and I was high and had symptoms, tired, peeing etc. Then got myself a meter while waiting to see the nurse to find that my funny turns were actually caused by lows as low as 2.7.When I saw the nurse she gave me a meter because I was havng lows. But I was also having lots of highs (as high as 17 ish), fasting was high and after meals. Was after a while given Glicazide by the consultant and then told by doctor not to take it because of the lows.I was having repeated bouts of oral and other Thrush. Then they measured C Peptide and Insulin, all ok, dont know the figures.Sent for 2 Oral Glucose tests and couldnt go ahead as fasting figures were too high.My diagnosis has changed from Type 2,Type 1 ?, to Lada (Father has this), to Type 2 again, then Mody? Was given Glcazide again for a month as I had stopped having Hypos and felt Wonderful, then Consultant said I dont need the Glicazide as my HBA1AC was normal (been between 5.7 and 6) so the Diabetes is not yet having an adverse affect. My bp is very high (prescibed Ramipril) and Cholesterol is 5.6 (no treatment mentioned). On my last visit, I was referred to Genetic Specialists at a Cardiff Hospital and told I most definately have a form of Diabetes but they dont know what form it is!? My consultant wants me back in 3 months and was told to keep monitoring my bs but is there any point? My normal HBA1C puzzles the docs and the consultants, but for someone who has always run between 2 and 6 miles a day, walks 2 miles with the dogs and runs around after a 6 year old, plus only now eats twice a day, I dont know why. When I stop exercising for a few days, my bs stays high and my bp rises. If any one has been through anything similar please let me know,I really am at the end of my tether with it all, Thanks for listening x

Welcome to the wonderful world of 'MODY?' !!! You may never get a definitive diagnosis (after 2 years I haven't -- I know others who have been 'MODY?' for much longer), but you are plainly diabetic and the key thing is to ignore the diagnosis issue and focus on what works in getting your sugars down. Your good hba1c results clearly reflect good exercise and diet. Tinkering with amounts and timing of gliclazide should help to continue keeping hypos at bay. At the moment, blood pressure is probably the key thing to look at, and if you feel tired get them to check your vitamin levels. Good luck!

Thanks Desidiabulum, I can see you are a MODY X, yes they have stopped my Gliclazde now, while I was on it my sugars were great and much more stable, not going above 10, but now I am back to square one really, and it even goes high wth protein foods, so I cant get them down on my own x

If you're not having a bad hypo run then I really would insist on getting put back on gliclazide - show your GP your BG diary, which must surely make the case. It's only your exceptionally good exercise and diet that is keeping your levels down long enough for them to worry that they've mis-diagnosed. HBA1C between 5.7 and 6 is great for a diabetic (certainly better than mine!), but is not 'normal' in the sense of meaning that diabetes is not affecting you, and if they cut your meds and your sugars are rising then the HBAIC is bound to rise too.
