Hi all
I just need some quick advice re alcohol. I have just been diagnosed T2 and started metformin on Tuesday night. Night out for tomorrow has been planned for ages. Normally I drink white wine or bacardi and diet coke. All the forums seem to mention red wine. Is white wine still OK to drink on odd occassions or am I better trying red (never tried it before)? Don't have a monitor yet (ordered) so I can't check it's effects yet.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

You'll be fine. One night of not worrying about diabetes will probably do you more good.

I don't drink that often, but when I do I find it has a generally positive influence on my BG (which is good, because after a few pints my will power goes out of the window).

My diabetic nurse (lightheartedly) agrees with my theory diabetes is a 6 day a week disease as I always have saturday night off. I don't drink to oblivion as that's just stupid and not fun, I also enjoy the small pizza on the walk home too-no fun if you can't relax every now and then

Some useful tips and hints:

Dry wines (red and white) do not contain carbs.
Sweet wines do contain carbs.
Spirits do not contain carbs (unless they've been sweetened separately)
Beer and cider does contain carbs.
All kinds of alcohol stop your liver from releasing sugar - which is why borofergie finds that a night out on the booze helps bg!

so dry white wine and/or bacardi with diet coke should not make your bg rise; if anything it will do the opposite.

Thanks. You've been a great help.
I have just received my monitor(arrived early) and tested sugar. I'm 6.6 so must be doing something right. My hb1a was 9.something and my glucose meter reading was 13.something when I had blood taken last Wednesday (first diagnosed-got official results on Friday and started metformin Tuesday)
What a sad life when I get excited about receiving a machine that pricks my finger and draws blood!!!!!
